You must bear in mind that AVCHD is a very tight HiDef codec. It’s not Sony who has to “listen and do something”. To work with this codec you need a faster and more powerful rig.

I bought the Canon HF10 which captures to AVCHD format. 17MB per second at highest quality.

My rig is a Quad core 2.5 with 3GB DDR3-1066 ram. When editing in Vegas all 4 processors hover around 70%.

My concern is, if I capture in High Definition 1920 but my final output is PAL(720×576) which will need to be compressed using MPEG2 to DVD disc, I get a crappy MPG.

I did a AVI render last night using the YUV option in the AVI settings and got a brilliantly sharp movie. It was 32Gig. Now I’m going to try DVDA 4.5 to see the quality and will let you know.

Tell me, does the HV30 capture MPEG2 to tape? I know the HF10 and 100 capture in AVCHD which may require 17Mb for the same quality. I have asked the question before about the difference between the 2 codecs.

Finally got myself the Canon HF10. Totally amazed by the quality of this little cam. I still can’t believe what I’m seeing!

I thought that not having any moving parts that the battery would last longer than 80 minutes. I am trying to get the CB-819 battery pack which I imagine should last 160 minutes.

One question. Since this cam captures at 17 Mb per sec, Do I need a class 6 SDHC memory card. I understand that Class 4 captures at 15 Mb per sec.

Thanks for the link to Vimeo site. I did check out the footage of the HF10 and am amazed at the quality of this small hand held cam. But after viewing a few clips I could not not view any clip anymore. I get the whole page except the clip. What happend?

    Charlie,

You will need to update to the latest Sony Vegas Pro 8 version (8.0b build 217) which you can download from their site.

I had tha same problem but after the update it worked fine.

This is true but you cannot shorten the music. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Your OS drive (usually C:) is where your hidden Pagefile file exists. It is by default on the C drive. When your PC is working and buffering it uses this pagefile. What I have done is to make mine 4096GB and minimum of 3072GB.

You can configure this file to any size by doing the following. It’s perfectly safe to do so.

In control panel, Dbl click the “System” icon. Click the “Advanced” tab. In the Performance section click “settings”. Then click the Advanced tab. You will see “Virtual Memory”. Click Change. And there you will see your listed drives. Click on “Custom Size”. And now you can change it. Ignore what Window recomends because Windows doesn’t know your needs.

What this does is to configure hard drive space as RAM. Windows will keep this space available. You will need to restart your PC to make it active.

So can you imagine Sony Vegas rendering to your C drive while your PC is also doing its thing on the C drive. That’s why you should render to another drive. Also in PI3 you should save your output to another drive for the same reason.

    Lee,

PI3 does not have the option to render to another drive. If your system is “hyperthreaded” you may want to switch it off in the CMOS while working in PI3. I find that speeds rendering and previewing significantly.

Speaking about “time stretching”, holding down CTL and dragging your clip left or right. How do you return it to normal?

  • I’ve used Pinnacle from ver 6 onwards to Ver 11. I have since migrated to Sony Vegas. Pinnacle is very easy to use but you can’t compare it to Sony Vegas Pro 8. SV has a lot more powerful features that can take time to master and you won’t be sorry for learning them. The price for SV is about 3 times more expensive but worth every penny.

SV offer unlimited layers, which when you master, the masks, multiplyed layering and many more options together, will give you effects that you’d never get with Pinnacle.

My son uses Pinnacle for home vids and there is a lot of FX and transitions that you can buy.

My advice is SV Pro 8.
