[Colin McQ] ” the whole tape doesnt need to be striped,, just enough for pre-roll and a little extra for good measure..”

hum.. havent had this trouble using edit to tape before!? Every time I use the edit-to-tape function I always specify the exact TC I want the picture to start at.
first off, at the top middle of the edit-to-tape window,, does the button say “mastering” or either “edit” or “editing” if its on “edit/ing” change it to mastering.
secondly, is the tape you are going to edit to striped with the proper timecode? the whole tape doesnt need to be striped,, just enough for pre-roll and a little extra for good measure.. so say you wanted your video to start at 1:00:00:00,, then start TC on the tape at say 00:59:00:00 or earlier,, depending on what you need to lay down before IE: colour bars / slate / black…

if your Final Cut project is say,, DV-PAL then use the Apple DV-PAL export settings,, if your FCP sequence is 8bit,, then use 8bit export setting..
then import the .mov that mpeg streamclip makes, do what ever it is you need to do in final cut,, then export the finished sequence as an mpeg 2dont worry about the bit rate while working in final cut.. worry about it when you export the mpeg-2 from final cut.

April 3, 2007 at 9:27 pm in reply to: The best way to import a 45″ TV ad from DVD to FCPMPEG Streamclip.. its free,, works great, and is very fast when converting for DV-NTSC, and not too bad at all converting to 8-bit uncompressed,, havent tried it with HD formats though.. just scan your DVD, set in and out,, and export to the format that matches your FCP timeline..
If you have a decklink or AJA card,, that would no doubt be the best solution,, but if not,, then this software is great.

on that note,, check the render all drop down menu (sequence > render all) and make sure that all options are checked off (have a check mark beside it),, doing a “render all” will only render all of the checked off options. what gets alot of people is the render full option is not checked,, with this option off just about everything will looked rendered and for the most part play back fine,, but during GFX transitions and a few other instances shifting will be noticed. I first discovered this with .tif GFX over video shifting a line or 2 during transitions,, found the render all was not checked,, once fixed,, all played back perfect.
(the timeline indicator for a clip needing ‘render all’ is only a slightly different shade of grey),,

Cheers! the canopus box is prolly what i’ll end up getting,, i’ve used one before for digitizing of VHS chase copies for vid follow during audio post prod….
I was hoping there might be some contraption out there,,no more than cell phone sized with a firewire plug on one end,, and either s-vid or RCA on the other, strictly an ‘out’ for SD monitering on a CRT, that would fit nicely in the front pocket of a laptop bag..
thanks,

Very true, all the Towers here have blackmagic cards for that purpose.. although an external on the rack would be handy aswell,,
but as mentioned,, just looking for a small, portable ‘monitor only’ solution for my MBP while on the road or on the couch.
thanx!

If I could have waited until after NAB,, I would have.. But alas,, in my haste (and need for a new portable editing system) I purchased a 17″MBpro 2.16 intel core duo,, only to see apple release a few months later, for the exact same price, the 2.33MBPro intel core 2 duo with ram capacity increased from 2 to 3 gig,, and if I understand correctly, 64bit ready where mine is not. wasnt very happy ’bout that one 🙁
however, I am waiting ’till after NAB.. and perhaps a generation after that, before upgrading my desktop.

I’ve seen this in rendered transitions before, when copying a clip that has an end in a transition (only selecting the clip, not any portion of the transition), when pasted, the portion of that clip that was in the transition would play back the transition render files up to the end of the clip,, even after re-rendering. The only way around this that i’ve found is to right click and “remove attributes,” then re-render. You dont need any of the box’s checked off,, just leave them blank and click OK.
still leaves you with the headache of having to re-render the clip though…
