Can I specify timecode in Edit to Tape?
Posted by Fred Grossberg on April 3, 2007 at 11:25 pmI generally lay back my projects by doing an Edit-To-Tape assemble edit. Is there any way to specify the starting number for the timecode that Final Cut will lay down on the tape? It would be great if I could get it to start at 1:00:00:00. As it is now, it just starts the t.c. at some seemingly random number and I have no idea where it gets it.
Thanks, friends. –FredMichael Alberts replied 19 years, 1 month ago 6 Members · 11 Replies -

April 4, 2007 at 12:09 amhum.. havent had this trouble using edit to tape before!? Every time I use the edit-to-tape function I always specify the exact TC I want the picture to start at.
first off, at the top middle of the edit-to-tape window,, does the button say “mastering” or either “edit” or “editing” if its on “edit/ing” change it to mastering.
secondly, is the tape you are going to edit to striped with the proper timecode? the whole tape doesnt need to be striped,, just enough for pre-roll and a little extra for good measure.. so say you wanted your video to start at 1:00:00:00,, then start TC on the tape at say 00:59:00:00 or earlier,, depending on what you need to lay down before IE: colour bars / slate / black…

Do you have the deck’s TC set to REGEN? If not, that may be your fix. Like Colin said, stripe what you need to start your bars and tone and you should be golden.

I’m sorry, but have you looked at the Help Menu in FCP? The Manusl pretty clearly describes where the In / Out points are entered in the Edit to Tape window. Underneath the Preview window.
As for making the tape start in a specific place, you do that by blacking the head of the tape first and then you set both FCP and the tape to start the edit at 1:00:00:00 if that’s your desired start point.
Generally we start our edits at 00:59:00:00 with bars and then the show starts straight up at 01:00:00:00.

April 4, 2007 at 5:59 amHello!
I’ve got a similar question using the Sony DSR-40 DVCam deck. It always starts timecode at 00:00:00:00, but I’d like to do the same with FCP as my UWV-1800 Beta-SP deck will let me black from 00:58:50:00 so that I can assemble edit 30 seconds of bars starting at 00:59:00:00, 10 seconds of slate starting at 00:59:30:00 and 20 seconds of black starting at 00:59:40:00 before the program starts at 01:00:00:00.
With the Sony DSR-40, I’ve been forced to start black at 00:00:00:00 (since I can’t start at 00:58:50:00 via either FCP nor the deck itself), lay down 60 seconds of bars starting at 00:00:30:00, 10 seconds of slate starting at 00:01:30:00 and 20 seconds of black starting at 00:01:40:00 before the program starts at a strange point of 00:02:00:00.
Obviously, it would be great to start at 01:00:00:00 instead of 00:02:00:00 on the Sony DSR-40. Has anyone ever found a way to do that?
Thanks in advance,

April 4, 2007 at 10:10 pmAs far as I can tell,, no can do with the DSR-40.. I use one most days,, and a while ago went through the manual and menu options to try and set TC to start at a specific time when crashing.. but no luck.
fortunatly have a dub rack with a DSR-80 on it within arms reach,, so I black the first minute of my output tapes in the 80 before outputing with the DSR-40.
