In the past I’ve been recommended the Matrox mini or Matrox MXO2. The mini sells for $500. You would use this as your I/O and hook up a professional monitor for accurate monitoring of your coloring. I’ve read that others will just use an Plasma HDTV for there monitor while hooked up via an I/O device. Hope this helps.

Look on the bottom left, 4th button from the left that is a small triangle. Click that and you can turn off clip names in your timeline.

The Vixia you are shooting with does not shoot at full 1920 by 1080. Instead it shoots at 1440 by 1080 and fits a full frame by adjusting the pixel aspect ratio. I believe if you export out your current project as is, you should get a quicktime file that is at 1920 by 1080. If it give it to you at 1440 by 1080 you take that into compressor and adjust your aspect ratio in there to fit 1920 by 1080 or what ever frame you desire for the web.

It’s hard to help when you don’t give me the specific settings you used in compressor for your Blu-ray. There are many factors that could be effecting your quality of output. Start off by checking your average bit rate. 30Mpbs is a good starting point. Make sure you are doing a Two pass VRB. What are you using to burn your video to Blu-ray?

Jim,
First let us know the codec, frame size and frame rate that the video file says. I’m not familiar with the specifications that the iPad records in, but I would convert the .mov file to ProRes and edit your video with that. Once you are finished, export a self-contained video file, go to compressor and choose one of the DVD presets and then take the two files from that into DVDSP.

Hi Marc,
I’m making the transition from Final Cut Pro to Premiere as well and I’m experiencing similar problems. Playback isn’t very smooth. Scrubbing seems to be very bad and occasionally my audio will drop out while I’m monitoring. I’m using 5.5 on a Mac. So far I’m not very impressed, but I’m sure it is something I’m doing wrong.

Mac OS Extended (Journaled) should work fine. If your drive is already in the format then you should keep it there. I would try Mark’s work around and see if that works for you. I shoot with the 7D all the time and bring in clips through L&T usually without any problems. I do have the plug-in from Canon as well. Maybe check Canon’s site and download the latest EOS plug-in. I hope everything works out for you.

What are you using as your scratch disk and what is it formatted to? Not being able to bring in files over 4 GB sounds like your scratch disk is formatted to FAT32. FAT32 only allows file transfers under 4 GB and this would be problematic when bringing in large file clips.

You are correct, when you edit with Proxy video it is easier for your computer to handle because the “Proxy” file is a lower quality version of your original media. When you are finished with your edit you take the Proxy files offline and re-link the sequence to your original media.
