    Hello Contributors,

Thanks for all your answers to past issues. I’ve used this resource countless times but haven’t found answers to a specific problem I’m currently facing.

Completed an interview shoot with a t3i and Zoom audio and I’m looking to log and transfer the t3i footage into FCP 6 but I keep getting an error that I have ‘Low Disk Space’ — even though this is not the case. I have the Canon plug-in and am able to easily bring in smaller clips, but the larger files, over 4GB or so, will not come in without a ‘Low Disk Space’ error message. Curious to know if anyone has addressed this particular issue and what advice you’d have to log and transfer bigger files. I’ve used MPEG Streamclip on some and have had success, but if anyone has a work around to allow a log and transfer without the added step, I’d appreciate it. Or, if anyone has settings to recommend in MPEG Streamclip, that would be great to.

    Thanks for your assistance.

    Hi Paul,

We shoot on 7&5d’s and i’ve usually found this to be a codec issue if the disk space error shows.

As a rule we always send our footage through mpeg streamclip.
It makes editing so much quicker and easier, it’s just part of the process.

We encode to pro res 422 (LT or HQ), unscaled, and un-tick interlaced scaling.

What are you using as your scratch disk and what is it formatted to? Not being able to bring in files over 4 GB sounds like your scratch disk is formatted to FAT32. FAT32 only allows file transfers under 4 GB and this would be problematic when bringing in large file clips.

Thanks for your responses. Mark, I will use the pro res 422 settings in the future when working with clips — DSLR and others — that I cannot log and transfer.

Cody, as for the hard drive, I’m currently using a Hitachi external as a scratch disk. Want to work through this project and begin writing to a new WD MyBook external formatted HFS+ for Mac. Any tips on how to format this drive and others when setting it up would be appreciated. Understand that Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format settings work with files over 4GB. Is that your experience? Will I need to make any changes to the drive when setting it up? Realize you’re likely working with different hardware, but any generic tips on formatting drives would be appreciated.

    Thanks so much.

Found this on how to format a drive. Probably all the info I need.

    Paul,

Mac OS Extended (Journaled) should work fine. If your drive is already in the format then you should keep it there. I would try Mark’s work around and see if that works for you. I shoot with the 7D all the time and bring in clips through L&T usually without any problems. I do have the plug-in from Canon as well. Maybe check Canon’s site and download the latest EOS plug-in. I hope everything works out for you.
