May 14, 2008 at 2:52 am in reply to: Ideal raid setup for uncompressed 1080p 8bit workflow in fcp.Don’t say sorry, thats exactly the advice I need I suppose. But, I will not be doing any of my effects in FCP, I will be doing them mostly on a Flame, so just bringing the finished shots, the most I will be using in FCP is fade in/out or dissolves, which is obviously nothing.
“You need sustained throughput of at least at a bare minimum, and three drives striped together as raid-0 is only gonna give you like 180 or 200mbps completely empty, and even less as they get filled up. You’re gonna need to stripe 5 to eight drives for what you want”
This is what I want to hear, the tech stuff. So you mean striking 5 drives, and making sure each SATA drive I buy is at least 240mbps. Say I buy 5 240mbps SATA internal drives, after I stripe them, will they still be 240mbps? Or does striping them lower their mbps value?
Also should I go raid 0 or raid 5 for highest speed? I know one is safer than the other but one is faster than the other correct?

March 13, 2008 at 3:42 am in reply to: filming a car chase scene like the one from BullittWhat I recommend is instead of thinking how expensive and how crazy and ridiculous it may be, just start by storyboarding it, forget costs and all that other crap, if you realize it’s too expensive, look into cgi. Haven’t you seen Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift! Ha, jk. I havent, but heard there is a lot of cgi cars. Well, gone in 60 seconds was a great chase film, but not as good as Ronin in my view, or the Italian Job for that matter. Just storyboard it, don’t let costs or permit stuff scare you away from your ideas, don’t let the system change your art, change the system with your art.

February 7, 2008 at 6:01 am in reply to: Starting a rental company. Securing deposits with Credit Cards or Pay Pal?Hows it going, its simply my personal film equipment to rent out when not in use by me, to make money instead of letting gear sit there.
Good idea, asking the bank is a good start. I hope being a “merchant” isn’t too costly that I end up losing money if gear just sits around too much.
I don’t plan on accepting cards over the internet or phone, just in person upon rentals. Thanks for the info on the contract as well, I never even thought about that.
I won’t actually hire anyone, it would just be me, an on call type of business when people may need gear, p2 camera, steadicam, tripods, light kits, etc, I don’t own those things yet I own much less professional equipment but I can even rent those out if needed. I just want to be ready in case I do wish to invest then rent out gear.
Hey about that rental contract, how much would you charge me to email me a contract so I can have a starting point for a template? I simply can’t afford to go to a lawyer and if necessary may just write one from scratch.
Thanks!

January 11, 2008 at 7:38 pm in reply to: Uprezing from 1080 to 4K in post, then back down for 35mm delivery.Noah its not that I don’t want to be wrong, its that I want to online my film for the maximum quality when handing it off to the 35mm plant to transfer it. My goal is not just to have a nice looking film on my desktop, but also for DVD and a 35mm print, if I have to online at different reoslutions for each format I will do that, just trying to really narrow down what would be best.
So we made progress, 4K is ridiculous, lets just forget about that workflow, Im not doing Spiderman here and even if I was I would still do it in 2K.
Now, when I hand the film off for the uprezing, should I deliver in HDCAMSR with a 1920×1080 file, or on a harddrive with a filesize of 2048×1152 or 2048×1080?
I have not even shot my film yet, as I want to make sure I know how Iam going to online it before I even start. Thanks again for all your comments and responses.

January 11, 2008 at 2:30 am in reply to: Uprezing from 1080 to 4K in post, then back down for 35mm delivery.I know Ill be adding a bunch of uprez noise, noise that would be there when it goes to 35mm correct? Correct me if I’m wrong though.
So I add the noise, basically simulating a 35mm blowup, then correct correct accordingly on the low res (original version), then my 1080 online version will look somewhat odd and over saturated, blacks too black, etc, but thats fine, because I then know thats only the 35mm blowup version, ensuring it to look its best.

January 11, 2008 at 12:35 am in reply to: Uprezing from 1080 to 4K in post, then back down for 35mm delivery.Makes sense, though my purpose of this is to be able to view the project and edit it already blown up (hense 4K, or even 2K), so I get no surprises such as ridiculous grain, distortion, or even pixelation in the shadows and dark areas, as I would be able to fix it in post before is blown up to 35mm.
I know it can be very expensive, etc, but perhaps we are thinking differently when I say onlining in 4K.
My idea of this would be to scale the entire online version up to 4K or 2K resolution in my compositing program. (Space is not an issue, terabytes are cheap these days).
So this is my idea to simulate the 35mm blowup in my own studio, allowing me to see the ridiculous grain, distortion, or even pixelation in the shadows and dark area if they are there. If so, go back and tweak the original 1920×1080 online version and preview in 4K or 2K again until all looks good.
Then I can be comfortable sending it to a real facility for the 35mm blow up print. (Well, I definitley wont be doing this, the distributors will, as we all know its very costly.)

Cool, yeah the grain should pretty much do it for you then huh, maybee also just lower the contrast to make sure the blacks aren’t too black in the CGI so it doesn’t stand out from the rest of the objects in the shot. Let me know when its complete sounds like you made something great, take care.
