  • Punching a hole through a wall.

Posted by Eran Solomon on January 6, 2008 at 10:05 pm

    Hey!

So im going through this scene where I punch the edge of a wall to break it a part.
I extended the wall a bit and made a nice looking hole with photoshop and some demolished wall pics combined.

Now im looking for stuff that can improve the realistic look.
Im using Shatter with a costum map + a shatter with a noise map.
Ive tried using a dust puff from Particle Illusion but its .. kinda lame.
I have Particular also. dont know where to start though..

Any suggestions will be gladly accepted !

    Thanks in advance!

Try doing a model of some pieces of the wall, animate them towards the camera or hit the floor with acompanying shadows? Do you got a low res version to see what you got so far? Im surprised you didnt have good luck with particle illusion, usually it has great results, but you have to know how to tweak it just right.

    Hey Dave,
Like I wrote , I punch it , with my fist.
I didnt have to use a chroma key since I just masked the corner of the wall and moved it a bit (extended it).
than made a hole in it.

    Think of a super punch.

    Hey,
I actually used shatter for the “3d” pieces, but it looks kinda lame.

I’ll upload a lowres later on today when I get back from work.

    Thanks!

Looks good to me actually, try bringing the cgi elements into after effects, then applying grain or matching the colors to the actual wall interior. Try having extra dust fall down the wall, but make it linger, as it is dry wall, that stuff would really kick up a storm of dust, thicker white powder, perhaps adding a bit of camera shake once your done? Let me see the finals as you progress.

    Hey,

Ya matching the grain was a good idea. looks better.

About the thicker dust…. I tried making some with particular , I just wish it had some kind of inner shadow to it. “Smokelete” just looks unreal.

    Thanks again Clint.

Cool, yeah the grain should pretty much do it for you then huh, maybee also just lower the contrast to make sure the blacks aren’t too black in the CGI so it doesn’t stand out from the rest of the objects in the shot. Let me know when its complete sounds like you made something great, take care.
