I’ll second Craig on the DV Creator 44 light kit. We use those and I like them a lot (we order the ones with the hard case, they’re a little more money). It’s a good basic kit, well suited for interview work. Treated properly it’ll last forever, although I’ve noticed some fraying in our softbox covers from being folded to fit in the case.

I like the 32GB swap idea or the Nanoflash idea. Of the possibilities you listed, the Sony hard drive unit makes the most sense. Both of the others add another layer of potential problems. Say the MBP chokes on the footage for some reason…unlikely, but still a possibility. The Internet stream could be prone to any number of disruptions.
I’ve heard mixed reviews of the “Foo” 120K. It uses a USB interface, so I don’t know if it would gradually “fall behind” on you. Then you will probably corrupt a very long clip. Of the people I’ve read using this thing, none of them have mentioned using it for a long, continuous shot. Stopping and starting allows everything to “catch up” to the footage you are sending to the SxS slot, adapter, and hard drive. Rolling continuously doesn’t give it any room for that.
If you really want some security, do the 32GB card swap AND record to NanoFlash from the SDI output of the camera. Redundancy is a shooter’s best friend. You could shoot “SP” mode on the camera’s SxS cards to conserve space, treat them as the backup, and record whatever quality you want to the NanoFlash. Just make sure you’re keeping track of the cards diligently.

I have the 2.2.1 installer, Intel only. You may wish to simply call or email the ServicesPLUS guys directly – they were a great help when I needed a part that wasn’t on the diagrams on their site. Quick and courteous.

Yes, I didn’t realize that the 64GB card is only an SxS-1 at this point (I assumed it was a Pro card). That would be the factor in requiring an upgrade.

I’m going to throw out a guess here and surmise that if your camera accepts 32GB cards, it accepts 64’s. That should mean ALL versions of EX3 and EX1R, and sufficiently updated EX1s.
Again, that’s a guess.

Sounds to me like it’s actually working better than expected, and that CS5 recognizes that each of the four clips you imported was part of a long continuous clip. Then when it imports each clip it does the job of joining all the segments for you, “behind the scenes” as it were.

That was an extremely important piece of information, thanks! 🙂 I’m going to try to sear that into my memory so I don’t panic sometime down the road. I can see someone plugging a PDW-U1 into a computer without the driver installed and freaking when our UserData folder is missing on an archive disc.

I’ve only ever tried this once since I love using my DSLRs with intervalometers for time lapses. It didn’t work out so well. I use a shutter duration of 30 seconds or greater with a DSLR, but trying to keep the shutter speed as slow as the EX1/EX3 allows with sufficient gain resulted in unusable noise.
Shooting the moon would work a lot better because it’s actually very bright. Once you find the correct exposure settings to get the moon’s detail I’m sure you’ll be within an acceptable range of gain/shutter. Trying for stars or auroras though, I think it may just be the wrong tool for the job.
Don’t let that keep you from trying, because it’s very likely that I’m just missing something. If you get a good result, let me know.
Last night had good potential for Northern Lights, just not this far south (I’m about 120 miles south of Canada). On our brightest aurora nights here in North Dakota you can read by ’em…but the solar minimum put a damper on that. Hopefully the sun snaps out of it soon!

These cameras have enhanced sensitivity to red and “far red” because of the filter used on the sensor. Tiffen makes a T1 IR filter for this reason. Usually it’s manifested in “brown” blacks in certain circumstances, such as many black synthetic fabrics. I’ve often suspected that my camera’s tendency to auto-balance a bit “cool” was due to this.
I haven’t sat down and done a comparison with/without the filter on, but I suspect this may help in such a case.
