I’d make the same suggestion – get a good stretch of uninterrupted room tone, then use that as a noise reduction sample in Soundtrack Pro. I’ve found that in nasty situations like that, knocking the noise reduction back to 50% or so and doing multiple passes can have better than expected results.

This camera has three “EXMOR” CMOS sensors, actually. While it is possible that the obstruction could be on one of them, I’m guessing it’s more likely to be on the prism or somewhere in the optics.

I prefer one copy to the MacBook Pro hard drive, one to a FW800 external drive. The Lacie “Rugged” fits in your pocket so it’s possible to keep your precious footage close to your heart. Dunno if it’s ever stopped a bullet in someone’s vest pocket or anything, though, like in spy movies! 🙂

My guess is that it’s in the optics then. By hitting the ND filter and opening your iris, that allows more light to “get around” whatever is causing the spot. The foreign particles cast a “shadow” of sorts and when there’s more light allowed in, it can reduce the effect of that shadow.
That’s why, when cleaning a DSLR sensor, you take test shots with the aperture cranked down tight (f/11 or greater) to make the spots show up so you know where to clean.

This discussion has been around as long as memory cards of any sort, I bet. The most persuasive argument I’ve ever heard for formatting hsa to deal with the file system.
Deleting individual clips (even deleting all) doesn’t write a new table of contents for the drive. If there was any sort of corruption it will not be fixed. I read a post long ago which speculated that deleting may cause data to be written to the card in haphazard fashion, replacing chunks of memory relating to when they were deleted. I think the reason was that a new FAT would see the whole card as one available space, while a FAT of a card with a ton of deletions would have many available chunks.
I quit caring about how disk operating systems work back in the 80s, so I don’t claim any sort of technical expertise here. I’m just passing along what I’ve read.

It looks like you can just use a coax cable with BNC ends to hook the MONITOR OUT of your EX3 to the composite input of that monitor. It’ll be a standard def signal. I’m going by the photo of the back of that monitor and the listing on Marshall’s page which says it’s a composite video input.

Like most things on the EX1 and EX3 apparently, this can loosen up over time. It’s really easy to slide the metal tab off the shoe and tighten the little screws underneath. I’ve had to do this to both cameras. I don’t know if it’s because our cameras operate in ranges from -20 degrees F to over 100 degrees F, but I’ve had a LOT of screws loosen on the cameras. Not to mention the fact that many people thing *I* have a screw loose! 🙂
If you’re going to hang something heavy on this shoe, it wouldn’t hurt to actually remove those screws and apply some blue threadlocker or something. If the weight causes it to loosen while you’re on a shoot, that could be inconvenient at best and risk breakage at worst.

I’m right-handed but left eye dominant…that makes running a video camera quite interesting, not to mention shooting a rifle. Handguns are easy, thankfully. Good thing so many camcorders these days allow their eyepiece to slide out a long ways to the left, or I’d be in a state of permanent migraine!
