I recently got a WMV file I had to use.
If you’re on a Windows box, you can use Windows Movie Maker to do the job.
What worked for me:
Open the WMV in Windows Movie Maker, drop in timeline. “Save Movie file” and “My Computer” as Movie Location to save to. Next, for “Movie Settings” select “Other Settings” and from the pulldown choose “DV-AVI(NTSC)”
Avid MC was OK with the AVI and I was able to incorporate it into the project (looked awful to start with, looked no less awful to end with. G-I-G-O). -
Make an Alias on the Desktop of the drive you want to be able to keep seeing,
Go to Finder>Preferences and uncheck the “Hard disks” box under “Show these Items on the desktop.”
The “real” drive icons will disappear, but the alias of the desired drive will remain, awaiting your double-click. -
Can you start up from the install/restore disk? (Start, hold “C” key to force load from optical drive)
If so, once the OS is loaded from the DVD, go to menubar and select Disk utility.
That done, see if your Hard Drive shows up in the iist on the left. If it does, click-select the drive name (ie MacintoshHD) and click the “Repair” button. If there’s a problem with catalog or file structures, this and/or Alsoft Disk Warrior may get you back up. If there was physical damage, off to the repair shop and probably a new drive.
In any case I hope you’d done a backup not too long ago. -
What kind of problems are you having at production level that are causing you difficulty? What format are you shooting in,
DV25, DV50, SD, HD, HDV?
Unless you can monitor your shoot through exactly the same path as your material will be distributed, it’s very difficult to anticipate a result.Without more info, all I’ve got is:
-Talent shouldn’t wear herringbone-patterned jackets.
-Don’t use set pieces with finely detailed diagonal lines. -
Any place I’ve been, a technical supervisory position did not imply Management duties, the “technical” part indicating that those responsibilites do not cover staffing or HR/personnel matters, just “supervision” of the facility’s equipment and its utilization. This is also true in many Union shops as well, where a strictly technical Supervisor may carry that title, and remain a Union-represented hourly employee, eligible for OT or penalty payments.
It seems silly that “Technical” would suggest to IT that this is their territory. Don’t you have Technicians or Engineers who perform maintenance on transmitters and studio gear, most of which uses embedded or external computers, without IT intervention? Your, and their, job descriptions should be very clear as to who works on what. Your respective area Managers should be the ones responsible for clarifying job duties and jurisdictions.
How about “Post-production Systems Specialist?” or “MBA-speak” it up a bit and go for “Broadcast Post-Production Solutions Optimization Synergist.” 🙂 -
“Loss of Data” describes a pretty huge range of possibilities.
Exactly what kind of data was lost? Applications? Prefs? Files? Documents? etc.? Did you do the upgrade via online Software Update pane or download it from apple.com?
Have you done a search on your drive(s) for the missing data, in case it somehow got moved from where you expect it to be?
I did the 10.4.11 update many months ago on a G4 MDD with no apparent problems.BTW, Get More RAM! 512MB barely enough to support the OS in addition to memory needs of applications.

Use Disk Utility installed on the machine to run Repair Permissions.
You can use the onboard Disk Utility to Verify, but not Repair the startup drive. To do Repair you need to boot from the installer or from an OS on a separate drive, and run Disk Utility from that disk. -

Aha. This is probably the main issue. Way, way too little RAM for the job at hand. You should have at least 2GB RAM on your system. Memory is inexpensive and will make a very big difference in performance.
2k dimension images are fairly large. Unless you’re needing to keep them at that size for zoom-ins or panning, size them down in PS before importing into FCP. This will also save some processing resources until you get more memory in there. -
What processes are listed as running when you run Activity Monitor? This should show you what might be hanging things up.
Do you have Spotlight indexing and journaling turned off on your external drives?
