May 17, 2006 at 3:50 pm in reply to: FCP crashing! in DVCPRO 720-24p with AJ-HD1200A deckHi Gary and Walter this is a slightly sideways issue but still related to this thread.
I am about to install a suite based on a Kona 3, G5 Quad with 6Gb of RAM and FCP 5.1 for
editing up to 40 hours of DVCPRO HD from Panasonic Varicam shot at 720p | 50 so the threadline“Capturing from the 1200a has always been as easy as working in DV. (except in 720p50)”
is very scary for me.
Could you please help by explaining what the capture problem is from this deck to FCP 5.0 or above?
Thanks in advance.

May 10, 2006 at 8:38 am in reply to: Nesting is definitely broken….as is this whole programHi Bob
The other way to look at this problem is just to load the sequence into the clip viewer
and hold down the command key to force FCP to insert or overwrite the sequence material
as master clips into your new sequence. I find this more powerful than nesting. Copy and paste attributes
for effects, or hold instances of effects in a bin to reapply. Anamorphic or letterbox can be forced by
changing your new sequence settings. Sequences in sequences work for me. Duplicating sequences for multiform
work in FCP via this method is the safe way to go. At least you can mix and match – source clips with sequence material.

I think the best you can hope for is superliminal – around 3 frames
halfmixed from white on black in PAL or NTSC. Coke Ads from the early 90s get close.
Of course there’s always the fabled Langford Hack – the pattern that crashes the mind observing it –
but that doesn’t exist quite yet. Audio subliminals of below 10 milliseconds work mighty fine
in my experience however.
Cute subject and very old school for a psyche department – reminds me of altered states…. -
Thanks Pierre – that explains quite a bit about the problems I am experiencing.
As a recap – ONLY use the combined updater if you want everything to work.
I will repost when I install FCP5.1 universal and Logic 7.2 universal.Best Regards

Hi Rainer and Tony – leading from my last post about Font Book and 10.4.6 – I have had to ditch it.
Font Book has become unusable. Font caches now become corrupt very quickly.
I have had to use FontFinagler twice in the last 2 days to clear bad font caches.
Here is the best article I could find in simple terms on the net:
https://www.tcinternet.net/users/jklstudios/temp/osx4.html
Suitcase Fusion works without problems.
It recognises Motion 2, LiveType 2 and DVD Studio Pro 4 where Suitcase X1 wouldn’t.
I’ll keep posting if I hit any other big speed bumps with 10.4.6.Best Regards

Hi Rainer and Tony
I have encountered a problem with 10.4.6 that may be serious.
The font utility that ships with Tiger, Font Book – is now very unstable.
I have used all the font systems available under OSX to get stable results.
Font Book worked with all the Apple Applications in the Final Cut Suite, which I live out of.
As from 10.4.6 this is not the case anymore. I am currently testing Extensis Suitcase Fusion
excluding OSX system fonts and will let you know if this fixes the problem.
The problem is that all fonts registered as collections or libraries in Font Book now appear in ALL
applications, activated or not.
It is especially unstable with Microsoft Office 2004 and font management inside Word.
As I do a lot of font related work with lots of different apps (Cinema 4D, Combustion 4, After Effects) I am unhappy.
Anybody else getting this grief?G5 2.7Ghz 6 Gb RAM

Dear Chossy
if you are outputting Standard PAL SD anamorphic I would
be worried – that pixel ratio will not scale scale proportionally to 16:9 or 4:3.
Ask the animation suppliers for confirmation. Send them a recropped frame to show them what they’ll
be left with… worry.Best Regards

[Mr. Footagehead,
Have you ever heard of X-SAN?]
Yep, and had to provide training and support for a few companies using it.
Not bad for a network file storage pool.
Just the cigar box without the cigars.
To repeat myself NO network media management support for collaborative editing. And to be clear about your response – you believe X-SAN is a contender for Avid Unity?
Best Regards
Mr Footagehead -
The biggest difference between Avid and FCP as non linear edit packages is directly related
to the FCP Media Manager – there is NO backend database for managing clip media in FCP.
Until this is directly addressed there will never be a solid networked management system like Avid Unity for FCP.
Without a unique ID generated and regenerated for all project related media in FCP I can’t see this gettting fixed in a hurry.
The quirky thing about this is that XML seems to have huge promise as a platform for doing procedural editing tasks – much
more powerful than AAF.Best Regards please excuse the acronym ranting

Hi Bee
just a thought – is your FCP sequence audio set to 24 bit or 16 bit?
If it is set to 16 bit i think what you are describibng would be the result.Best Regards
