I gather you’re trying to find the best one that you can afford, not the most expensive and best. I have tried many and primatte keyer is unbelievable. You can key anything, super poor lighting, green fuzzy carpet, low rez video. It needs no fiddling or goofy workflow with layers and blurs. It’s fast and simple and fun to click around. Just shoot 1/100th shutter and deinterlace with algolith or fieldskit beforehand will give best results. AE’s field separate is kinda hokey. Download the primatte tutorial is fun to watch and will turn you into a better keyer than 90% of people in a matter of minutes because the tutorial uses all the problems people run into. spill, artifacts, etc. AE’s keyer is crap.

June 28, 2008 at 11:56 pm in reply to: Timewarp tutorial for NTSC video to Film

Timewarp instead of Twixtor uses same principle to extend longer footage but goes about it slightly different to get 23.976p

    1. You need to make a comp with de-interlaced footage and then sub-comp that in another comp-“effect_add”. Now you can access the longer, slower clip.

    2. Apply Timewarp to “effect_add” comp to 98.75 with extreme filter.

    2. Drag “effect_add” comp into new “resynced” comp and timestretch to 98.75. no sound

    3. add original footage as just sound to “resynced” comp and enable timeremapping for frame accurate sync.

trapcode particular would work fantastic for this. it has built in fade, time to live, pre-comp support, custom layers and full 3-D rendering with thousands of particles. you could add glow or shine to give it that special punch up. ipod nano tutorial would give you an excellent jump start.

June 27, 2008 at 6:21 am in reply to: color grading in AE Monitor requirements

its all about the accurate 32 bit color reproduction. IF you can’t color correct after a monitor calibration, your going to have poor results. Basically, if your monitor fails the calibration test, and you can’t see certain colors, run…

i don’t know of a LOTR tutorial but workflow could go something like this – green screen his finger taking ring off then match a cgi ring to it and transition to cgi to do whatever you what. import cinema 4d 3-D ring back into AE.

this may be a hit or a miss, but what if you re-encoded it uncompressed from FCP or quicktime player and tried importing back into AE. Then you’d know if AE is malfunctioning.

June 25, 2008 at 9:44 pm in reply to: how to make AE aware of added RAM?

so you have like 4 gb ram then? AE can go only 3 gb per processor. use -render multiple frames in preferences->multiprocessing simultaneously with 32 bpc, then each proc gets mo ram. mo ram is mo fun.

furthur tweaking can be found here:
