color grading in AE Monitor requirements
I’m wanting to use AE to color correct footage for a feature length horror that was shot with the Panasonic HVX200. We’ve been editing with FCP 5.1
Do I really need an extra card like the MXO or Blackmagic HDlink to make picture adjustments?
I know what I want the image to look like, but can I trust what I’m seeing on my LCD screen?
I’m interested in peoples workflow for this color grading process.

its all about the accurate 32 bit color reproduction. IF you can’t color correct after a monitor calibration, your going to have poor results. Basically, if your monitor fails the calibration test, and you can’t see certain colors, run…

To my knowledge, FCP is better and more acurate and faster in color correction
and having the system set up with YUV output to a calibrated monitor
I suggest it’s the best way (if your only talking about color) -
Ya basically adjusting the RGB levels crushing the blacks a bit. I had always heard that final cuts color correction wasn’t that great. I was looking for hardware for the PC similar to the MXO box for mac. that turns a regular LCD monitor into a calibrated HD monitor.

guess I’m a classic, working with (tube)monitors
but also for interlace problems that I wouldn’t see on a computermonitor
At least here in Europe, people talk good about FCP(6) colorcorrector and Apple color
as good tools for their purpose… -

For PC you could try Blackmagic Design’s HD Link. Does a similar job as MXO when using Dell/Apple 23-24″ displays. Interlacing isn’t as good as MXO – but if it’s a feature film you shouldn’t be working with fields anyway.
Of course a SONY CRT or high-end pro LCD would be your best bet via SDI, but this workflow should do you ok. Certainly better than trying to CC directly from your PC monitor!
Just out of interest…if you’re using FCP then why are you CC’ing in After Effects on a PC? Have you tried Color that ships with FCS?
If you want a HDLink a bit cheaper I have one I’m not using if you want to buy it.
