the videocopilot.net had a car hit effect with glass shards that shot out and fell on the ground, very convincing, and best of all, no extra plugins. Trapcode particular would work well too.

AE version 6 will open in 8 but not the reverse. Use an older copy you have then you’re fine.

if you use shatter effect and use layer of the font and turn gravity off, set all the values for Force 1 and Force 2 to 0, set layers side and top solid so they don’t look translucent

it will make your 2-d fonts go 3-d and you can rotate, zoom, pan, fly, etc, any font without the need of 3-d plugins.

“Quick Time Movies” You never said what codec you were trying to use. You may need to use another codec brand if quicktime is unfixable which means you can’t use quicktimeplayer’s export, only AE’s.

adding effects may be pushing AE over the edge from your high mem settings. try the defaults so that there is room for your graphics buffer to complete the effects.

    max mem usage 120%
    max ram cache size 60%

well I have noticed that exporting out back to a 4:1:1 codec completely destroys my footage. Its just too much data being thrown out. Jpeg2000 is what I use for final muxing. It’s like animation but 4 times smaller, 4:4:4 32 bit too.

then the next step is to use an uncompressed codec right from mxf files all the way through workflow. $5 says that fixes it.
    (disclaimer i have no $5)
