    If you only need a 50% slow effect, you could simply interpret the 60fps as 30 fps, and it would playpack half the normal speed. This only works for down to around 30 fps because any lower, and you get jerky slow motion footage, and no one wants that.

    IF you have a perfect plate, then you can use difference matte, but thanks to video compression, there’s no such thing as a perfect plate. Mocha is one step higher than roto.

    CTRL+ALT+SHIFT will ask you if you want to reset preference file as you open AE, but there could be a Zaxwerks issue such as the order or use of effects. I recommend Zaxwerks forums for known crashing problems. and your HD footage has to be intraframe compressed or AE could crash.

  • if you want smooth 18 fps and not jerky 18fps then try this

    29.97 interlaced to 18 progressive

    1.Put 29.97i video in new 59.94 “start” comp so that timewarp can access both fields.
    2. add effect->time->timewarp speed at 60.545403%, filtering extreme,vector detail 20
    3. make new “output” comp 99 fps and drop “start” comp inside it with timestretch 60.545403%
    4. output “output” comp with separate audio layer from original video at 18 fps fields off. add motion shutter blur if desired.

    tested and works well with 24 fps look too.

    Are you using any interframe compressed footage such as hdv, mpeg4 inside AE’s project files? You can try turning off opengl, and setting all AE’s memory to default by removing preference folder.

  • 8mm is 18 fps. Use posterize time, a lot of large sized grain, wiggle expressions in the x,y position, heavy contrast, etc. If you search in the forums here, you’ll probably find many detailed posts.

    If you import 60fps into a 30fps, the frames will get turned into fields. You will have 30 fps with 60 fields, 2 fields in each frame. Your eyes won’t see it though. that’s almost exactly what televisions show.

    If you’re using timewarp with fields, you have to place it in double the footage fps comp so that timewarp can access both fields again.

    If I were you, I would speed up the footage inside a 60fps comp then place it as a precomp in a 30fps. That way timewarp would work well and not be smeary.

    mpeg4 uses compression that doesn’t list every frame. I would keep everything uncompressed until it was going out someplace to reduce editing errors and syncing problems.

    If quicktime was corrupt, it would explain every problem you have listed. Try outputing a non-quicktime format, if that works then…

    I would try to completely uninstall/remove any remnants of it. google various places it tries to hide, including registry, then install “windows install cleanup tool”. Finally, download the lastest quicktime from apple.com
