the mp4 files are defiantly the video files size wise, i tried vlc and the video seems to play although it throws a whole bunch of errors and there are lots of interlacing issues.

Thank you for the advice, I will definitely do that, or atleast just have 1 internal as my boot and 3 for the Raid, however, as I downloaded and went to run carbon copy cloner, it crashed, and now it doesn’t force quit!! this is the same problem I was happening before I reinstalled the OS, wth! what could be causing this!

For some reason when I read this

Firewire, yes, but it’s not recommended for editing due to the lag. You can do it to make or restore clones.

I misread and thought you said FW800 was not recommend for BOOT, my fault. I will keep it running like this thanks!

December 9, 2010 at 9:33 pm in reply to: 16×9 Footage Into a 4×9 Project

Pretty much what Dave said, set the sequence up so it matches the compression of the 90% VHS footage you have, and then import the HD footage, you will need to render of course, unless you want to compress the HD footage to match the rest of the footage first. After that its a matter and dragging them into the time-line and decided if you want to have letterbox or cut the sides of the video to fill the screen. The HD footage will not look as clear as before in the SD timeline.
You could however put all the SD footage into an HD timeline, although this will take more processing time, I would recommend against it, unless the client is looking for 16×9 footage. What does your client want as output anyway? 16×9 or 4×3?

December 9, 2010 at 9:20 pm in reply to: Raid 1 for travel and backup

Ok with a software RAID, you’re processor is being used to not only to run your OS but also your application(s), be it FCP or something else…this is true with an internal software RAID created through disk utility generally RAID 0 or 1 or with an external solution.

Your processor should be used for 2 things ideally, 1. Running your OS & 2. Running your applications.

In order to run a software RAID, you’re going to use some of the processing power of your computer, although perhaps not as much with newer machines as as the case in the past.

The other problem with software RAID is you’re running your software over software, if your OS crashes, that could be a potential problem & cause your software RAID to crash. You mentioned RAID 0, again, you’d be using some system resources from the processor to run it & get speed, but a crash means you could potentially lose everything.

This makes perfect sense. However I have used both apple Raid Utility(the one that controller the PCIe Apple Raid Card) and Apple Disk Utilities raid to move raids to different installs of the OS on different drives. The potential to lose everything is not just a problem for a software raid, a hardware raid has that same risk, which is why I keep backups on separate drives. For the RAID 1 Situation, Apple Disk Utility read a single drive without a problem on a computer that never set up the RAID in the first place. And I did not mention Raid 0 in this thread.

You’ve got many options for a hardware RAID 1, 2 bay FW 800 connected product, we have a product called the
SOHORAID SR2 for instance, that does an automatic RAID 1.

That’s all well and good except that I already had extra drives and was not going to purchase another one. and need to carry each disk separately as I stated in my previous post.

What are you using to export to flv?

Also why the odd pixel ratio? 955×537, if possible you should have your pixels in powers of 2. 640×360, 1280×720, 512×288. I don’t think that would particularly cause your problem, but its good practice to my knowledge.

    Thank you for your response.

However I did some of my own research on the subject yesterday and came across this.

    https://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-BootDriveDogma.html

I read over this and followed this advise

Using Firewire 800 as a boot drive
My Mac Pro boots from an external Firewire 800 drive in order to free up all four internal drive bays for the important stuff — a capacious and ultra-fast data volume.

A 10,000 rpm SATA boot drive would be trivially faster (see discussion above). It’s just not relevant.

I dedicate the Firewire 800 drive to system and applications. Furthermore, I partition it into a 64GB system partition, guaranteeing that the fast portion of the drive is used, minimizing seek time and maximizing data transfer speed. More

When all four internal Mac Pro drive bays are not needed, using one of the drive bays for a boot drive is convenient and preferable to an external Firewire 800 drive, but use a separate drive for your data. The same idea can be extended to use another drive (or two) for a Photoshop scratch volume: see Optimizing Photoshop Performance.

So I currently have my OS booting off my FW800 External. Is this a bad idea in practice? Should I go ahead with you suggested and use one of my internal drives? Should I hook this drive up to my eSata port?

I also found some interesting stuff about partitioning.

    https://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-Partitioning.html

In theory it makes perfect sense, the outside of the disk will cover more disk space at the same RPM. However in my tests I have been doing my own tests and have been finding the read/write times are almost identical; although I am only doing it with empty drives so I am sure when these drives of gigs of data on them, that will change. Does anyone have experience with partitioning like this?

Really? I figured internal raid would be faster

I do have the Apple Raid card is there some other way to configure it besides Apple Raid Utility. Also how would I configure a hardware raid through my raid card?
