So my company sent me some footage from a trade show they did in china last week. The raw footage from the camera came in folders each containing data files like this.

    675_1980_01.MP4
    675_1980_01R01.BIM
    675_1980_01.SMI
    675_1980_01I01.PPN
    675_1980_01M01.XML

I am not sure how to open these, I cannot log and transfer with final cut, I tried going up different directories with no luck. What kind of camera puts out files like this and how do I open them. Its hard to communicate with the tech people from china because of middle men and a language barrier.

Also the .mp4 files will not open as is.

    please help

I don’t know for sure, but I do know that in China the video format that’s as popular as DVD, even more so is a form of CD-Video compression. Try searching wikipedia with those file extensinos and mayeb something will come up? Also, see if “Super” encoder or VLC will open it. They are both free.

What are the file sizes of each of those files. From the names only the .mp4 file looks to be a video file, but it would need to be converted before bringing into FCP.

They’re Sony XDCAM EX Files – probably from an EX1 or Ex3. You need to use XDCAM Transfer or Sony Clip Browser.

the mp4 files are defiantly the video files size wise, i tried vlc and the video seems to play although it throws a whole bunch of errors and there are lots of interlacing issues.

I just download the xdcam transfer and still get this
“675_1980_01” contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.

I know it was a Canon camera, I can open these videos it seems with VLC, however I am still getting heaving de-interlacing issues. As well as VLC giving me an error message saying
VLC can’t recognize the input’s format
The format of ‘file:../675_1987_01/675_1987_01.SMI’ cannot be detected.

Further research confirms XDCAM based on the files, however I cannot open any of these files in XDCAM Transfer or XDCAM EX Clip Browser, both programs will see the .mp4 files when trying to import, while the other files will be grayed out, and then once I attempt to import those files, they will say they are not readable.
Here are what the files look like, ever file folder has identical files, I did not see anything like BPAV or CUEUP.XML or MEDIAPRO.XML that I had seen in another thread here

If you’re using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, you can drag the clip to the new sequence button and Premiere Pro will automatically create a sequence based on the clips properties. Basically, if you have the codec on the Windows box, Premiere Pro will play it.

    Hey Christopher,

I had the same problem with a hard drive i received recently, however i got it to work. Here’s how:

    1. Download and Install the XDCAM EX plug-in (https://www.sony.ca/xdcamex/software.htm) for Mac

    2. After a successful install, open Final Cut Pro and goto File > Log and Transfer

    3. In the window, click on the left corner icon that shows a folder with a plus sign and browse to the BPAV folder from the files you obtained and click OPEN

    4. All the clips will be loaded in the window and then you simply choose what’s needed and drag it into the box below..

    Hope this helps man.
