I’m currently running Mavericks with FCP 6 and have only a few minor issues. But now that iPhoto has become Photos, it’s made a mess of trying to keep the iPhone in sync for apps like Instagram and WhatsApp. So that’s why I’m looking to upgrade. It’s not for split screens. See.. everyone has their reasons.

I’ve just duplicated, changed the title and customized. But if you can create a custom setting from scratch, I’m sure that will work. I was guessing that your problem was dragging in one of Apple’s presets, and thinking you were changing the settings when nothing was saving. Hope it works for you!

I think I know your problem. In Compressor, you have to duplicate the setting first. Your copy will then appear under the CUSTOM tab. That’s the setting you can change and customize to your heart’s desire. Make sure that’s the setting you’re applying to your file. The other settings are not customizable in the same way they were in Compressor 3 (I don’t know about 4).

Not everyone wants a rendered self-contained file. I export reference files all the time to make mp4’s in Compressor. The question is, why no video? This was days ago so maybe you solved the problem. If not, you have Video & Audio selected right, not just Audio?

Do you have Apple Compressor? I think you can go up to 30,000 Kbps.

For whatever it’s worth, I can now add to this thread. I edit with a 2012 rMBP i7, 16 GBs. I didn’t upgrade to FCP 7 so when X came out, have pretty much been stuck with FCP 6.0.6. I recently just upgraded from ML to Mavericks and then reinstalled FCS 2 from scratch. Of course to do this, you’ll have to first install Rosetta if you have the SL disc on hand (I had to purchase it from Apple when it was still being offered). You’ll then discover that the online updates only take you to FCP 6.0.5. I had done a TM backup so just copied over the newest updates so that I’m now back to 6.0.6.
I’ve noticed a slight loss in stability from Lion to Mavericks but it’s fairly predictable, at least in my case. If I try to do too many undoes (command Z), the program will crash. So I am constantly Saving! Occasionally if do the 1 second scrubbing (shift/arrow key), especially backwards, the program will crash. And I’m sure there’s other things I can’t think of right now.
I was having issues with Motion 3 (or so I thought) and wanted to upgrade in hopes that that would solve the problem. That’s why I needed to upgrade to Mavericks. But I gotta say, my rMBP is running a lot better on Mavericks than it was on ML! The scrolling lag is gone (or at least hugely improved). And I like the Finder tabs. So yes, there’s a bit of trade off in upgrading to the newest OS with old software like FCP 6.0.6… but if you keep Saving your work, and can tolerate the occasional crash, you can still get the job done.
If I discover any other predictable issues, I’ll report back.

Hey I’m in the same boat. I’m trying to do a fresh install of FCS 2 on Mavericks. I installed Rosetta from a SL disc and have just found the FCP 6.0.6 update on Apple’s website. Unfortunately, that’s actually a Pro Applications Update 2008-5 that only gives me 6.0.5.
I have 6.0.6 on a time machine backup. Can I just copy it over?

Hey did you get it working? I have the same camera but use Fcp 6. I’ve found that I have to turn the camera on first, and with the heads still engaged, then start FCP. If I turn the camera on after fcp has loaded, it won’t recognize the camera. If the heads disengage before I load fcp, it also won’t recognize. Just one of those things…

Pity no one’s responded to this yet. I’m running into problems as well. I just updated to Motion 5 and since I”m cutting with FCP 6.0.6, that means I have to export/import .mov files rather than just roundtripping with the motion file itself. I’m exporting w ProRes 4444 (422 doesn’t support alpha?) and what I’m discovering is that FCP only displays these files correctly if I set the Gamma correction to Approximate (System Settings/Playback Control). If I do this, however, the rest of my footage looks washed out. It’s been driving me crazy trying to find a solution or a setting I might be missing. Short of sticking with Motion 3 and round-tripping, does anyone have any suggestions?
By opening the same file in QT X (Mavericks) and QT 7 Pro, I can confirm it’s the gamma change by simply toggling the checkbox beside “Enable Final Cut Studio compatibility” and comparing the two files side by side.
