mp3 is best for web and portable players – can u rip to AIFF or WAV? 48K ? The other option is to convert the mp3 files if that’s all u can rip. Convert them to AIFF 48K b/4 import.

Why not transfer the proj. to a local drive and open – then export file to local drive and THEN, drop it onto whatever drive?

I just had a G5 Dual 2.7 go to sleep on me everytime I compressed video. It took awhile to troubleshoot and this may not have anything to do w/ your problem but 1 of the CPU’s were failing. It would run fine all day and even when editing in FCP and rendering there. But come to compression and it was not gonna do it. SO, I’ve had 1 of the processors replaced and all is well. Check your temps and monitor them while working.

Be sure to always click on the desktop when switching between the IO Control panel and FCP. This will save on the issues somewhat

This is completely normal. Analog sources have always had a pixel or three of black around some or all of the edges. 3/4in tape is even worse. When you bring in Beta footage and play back to your monitor u will not even see it. Shrink a video clip back into a small box and you will. I have always cropped the black when less than full screen. Don’t even worry about it. I have seen this with Media 100, insync razor/DPS, black magic, aja, it’s normal trust me.

10 Bit uncompressed will always yield better results then using a codec with compression. DVD MPEG2 files are heavily compressed and will have artifacts. You can lay out to tape from a 10bit uncompressed timeline yes. As for the filter effect, you have to weigh wether or not u want it with some banding or don’t want it at all.
