Hi, I’m working with some AVI files I’ve ripped from some DVDs. I’ve imported the clips into FCP and they are all ok. They play fine in the Viewer window. When I drag them onto the timeline I get the red bars suggesting they need renering. So far so good. Except when I render them, the sound quality is a little off. It seems to drop out every second or so. I used Handbrake to rip them and the audio option was mp3. I tried a different audio option and there was no sound at all! Any ideas? Thanks.

mp3 is best for web and portable players – can u rip to AIFF or WAV? 48K ? The other option is to convert the mp3 files if that’s all u can rip. Convert them to AIFF 48K b/4 import.
Can u rip video to QT? Even better for FCP.

It’d had been better to rip them with uncompressed (PCM) sound. FCP needs to render sound when it comes in a compressed format like MP3.

Use Mpeg streamclip to convert DVDs to quicktimes. No problems.

I’m now re-ripping all clips as Mp4 with AAC audio. This seems to be OK. Thanks.

If want to edit with the clips, don’t make them mp4 – that’s a delivery, not an edit codec. Use a DV codec, or ProRes, or DVCPro or something that’s not a web codec….

I’m gonna export them as Quicktimes and them import them again.

I’ve been trying to use Streamclip, but no matter what the source, all “convert to” menu options are greyed out. Thus no MPEG2 ability. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Kevin
