I know that the RED FCS white paper was out of date almost as soon as it came out – i found that out the hard way! The best place to go for all things RED is reduser.net – you will find your answer there in no time.

i think we all have gaps in our knowledge somewhere (today mine was figuring out how to use the multicam feature in a way that it was not designed for!) and i’m certainly no leading authority on FCP. However i have been using it for 4 years and have cut BBC broadcast docs and biggish feature films with it so perhaps i can help you out?

Err… no one replied to me & i never did find out what caused it. Sometimes it helped to rename the file i was trying to media manage and give it another go… Attack it in small chunks if that fails…

yes the only drawback of just copying the media is i dont have a single G-raid big enough
which would mean lugging two around with me (oof!)

but walter i totally get your point that fw800 is plenty fast enough for dvcproHD – have used
them many times for this (although i always seem to get the odd dropped frame even when no
filters etc are being used)

thanks walter also for the tip about naming the drive the same – i wouldn’t have thought to have done that so would have been constantly re-linking

will have a look at that supermag article with the offline RT workflow also – i really should know about this already but usually just straight copying the media turns out to be easier

and bouke – thanks for the 80 file limit warning in compressor – i don’t know that. however my tests going to dv pal suggest 35% of the original size.

anyway – good to know all of the above. perhaps i will end up lugging 2 graids around with me after all? will see how long the g5 is going to take to recompress 1.6tb or files to offlineRT….

Thanks Roy, Grinner & Stephen for your kind words.

I know the forum is a great place for those one-off questions but what i’m really after is someone who I can directly email, who also has that kind broadcast experience. With a forum it’s great to get a range of answers and opinions for a tricky problem with a software bug or such but i’m after something quite different.

Thanks for all your input though. Stephen i will go check out that broadcast video section as you suggested.

I can see the wisdom in all your comments, especially with all that chaos in his timeline – though i was wondering – why exactly would you transcode DVCProHD to ProRes? (Forgive my questioning – i don’t doubt you i just want to get behind the reasoning a bit better – i’m quite new to working with HD but i always want to learn and NOT to be like your nightmare freelancer!) I know ProRes is a great option quality wise – but don’t some bradcasters have issues with it? And if you are going back to DVCProHD isn’t it better to stay that way?

I’m using a blackmagic multibridge at the moment at a new place i am working (i’m more used to kona cards). is there something i should be watching out for with the DVCproHD?

On this project i will be working with predominantly DVCProHD footage but also a little bit of HDV and a little bit of RED (though i’m not sure yet if it will be set to 2k or 4k). My plan was to transcode the HDV and the RED footage to match and keep my timeline DVCProHD.
Can you see any problems/issues with this?
Would you just use media manager to transcode/recompress in my position?

Perhaps i should have asked all this as a separate topic?!?

I seem to be having the same problem but with a Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme…
I usually use Kona cards but this is at a new job with their hardware.

Editing DVCProHD straightforwardly – very tiny project – just setting up.

hi all
i realised the problem was a dodgy cable in the end –
feel very silly but the same damn cable was working between deck
and the macpro at work and had died by the time i got home!

my camera was flashing greyed out where it should
say auto or HDV in the signal settings menu which freaked me out
but with a new cable it was all good.

1080i50 firewire basic setup worked fine for HDV deck control and capture.
haven’t tried all the other functions yet.
