I used this tutorial from pixellab as a base.
I used mograph selection to select the specific clone I wanted to render. I hit the invert button and applied a volume effector. I checked the “Visibility” con and, boom, isolated the specific clone. Adjusted my render settings accordingly with alpha and saved a BUNCH of time!

August 21, 2014 at 3:30 pm in reply to: Multishader: Change texture on a specific cloneThanks Adam,
I gave it a try and was able to change it, but I wasn’t able to change it to a specific texture (bitmap? same thing?). I tried uploading a new texture into the shader effector, and while it did change it, it didn’t change it to what I selected, it changed to a random texture within the multishader.
Adjusting the brightness and scrolling through was a bit of a pain, since I have a bout 400 or so album covers. That and it did not preview the change in real-time in the viewport for whatever reason.
Another question. Is it possible to only render a selected clone instance? If they just want one album changed here and there, it would be great if I can solo that cloned instance and render it on alpha. I would think it would save a ton on render time.

Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Walter.

Thanks Cassius.
I believe I enabled people to download the original file, that would be as good as it gets it terms of quality.
I have a some stock footage of smoke and have been trying to use liquify but I’m not getting the same results. Others have told me the easiest way to do this would be with fumefx in 3ds Max. Problem is, I don’t have nor know my way around 3ds.
Thanks again.

Hey Tim. Thanks for replying.
Form was my initial inkling as well, and it may well be the case. But there’s something about the way the mask initially poofs up that appears more dynamic than what I’ve seen with Form. I’m no Form expert so maybe there is a way.

In Preferences>General make sure that “Default scale to frame size” is unchecked.

Thanks guys.
You’re right no need to roto the fingers as I can just key it.
The problems happen both near the beginning when the hand on the left grabs the phone and then towards the end when the phone lands on the table and the thumb gets in the way. The track drifts whenever the perspective of the phone changes, and yes I have ‘perspective’ checked.
Also, because the corners of the screen are being blocked by his fingers, I can’t apply the planar surface properly, just guessing at it.

By “move in 3D” I meant that it follows the camera movement and sticks to the cyclist.
I did do a quick run through with AE’s Camera Tracker. It’s not perfect but it’s pretty close. It does a real good job of tracking the camera movement, but does not track the movement of the cyclist (which I’m sure it wasn’t designed to do anyways).
The camera tracker alone gets me pretty close. Unless there’s another way, I’m just going to have to keyframe the text to get it just right.
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

Thanks Roland and Walter.
I’ve never used mocha but if it’s the way to go for this effect, I’ll take the time to learn it. I watched through the tutorial you posted and just have a few questions. Although the surfboard tracking had some 3D motion in it, the movement was more or less along the X and Y. The majority of the movement that I need to track will be in Z space.
Here’s one of the shots in question actually. Again the idea is that the text will be tracked above or to the side of the cyclists head and move in 3D as the driver passes by.

So will mocha do a good job at tracking the cyclist?

Thanks Walter. I know the new camera tracker will track the camera movement, but will it also track to the cyclist? If I were tracking to a stationary object, this would be easy enough, but since the cyclist is also moving, not too sure on that…yet.
