Assuming you are using FCP 6, it will change the sequence setting to the first clip you put in it, unless you tell it no. You might try going to the sequence pulldown and changing all your settings back.
If that doesn’t work, make a new sequence and copy and paste into it. Or start over.

About the HDMI business, your camera does not have HDMI out, but you can use one of the little Canon’s like the HV20 I believe. Of course, you will need an AJA iOHD or a Blackmagic Intensity card to capture it that way. Whether quality would be better is debatable.
I do what was recommended, I capture native HDV from an A1 only I put it in an SD timeline set to 8bit. FCP will add the shift fields filter, unless you shoot 30p.

That’s in line with what I need to do, however, the greys are different, some are warm and some are cool, so there has to be an element of all three channels involved, not just exposure. That’s why I thought Colorama could help, since I could dial in all 10 colors exactly.

I beg to differ. Technically, you are correct, but I have done several tests with hirez and low rez images of the same frame size, and the higher rez images CAN cause much more artifacting than the low rez ones, depending on the subject matter and the movement/scaling. Note I said CAN, not will. And, FCP does behave differently with the hirez images, it slows it down. It’s just wise to always optimize stills the way Walter describes at 72 dip at 2x the frame size. Otherwise, you’re just asking for problems.

2x the frame size, Walter put it right. 72 dpi is all you need, FCP will sometimes choke on high rez images. Just a waste in video.

My rule of thumb, is roughly twice the frame size of your project at 72 dpi. Rarely have I needed anything bigger, higher rez files are just a waste, and choke FCP. Not to mention add to artifacts like jittering.

I have one of LGs off-brand Ensignia units, just fantastic, everything you want. Got it at Best Buy for less than 200 bucks.
I also have a Panasonic 3040 FW burner which has a 40 gig hard drive in it, super machine and it could be for sale.

If your picture quality is decent, then it’s likely not the jpeg format that’s the problem. First generation jpegs that come out a a digital camera work fine. What you are seeing may be motion artifacts caused by one or more things, images with lots of hard-edged details, images not properly optimized (frame size, etc.) and movement/scaling all can make this happen.
Assuming your pictures are sized properly, (1440 wide at 72dpi for most SD projects is about right) you should mess with the motion and scale settings, and/or add a bit of vertical or gaussian blur or the flicker filter.
It’s also critical to be viewing your RENDERED work on a proper monitor, not the canvas.
