Guys,
Give it up on the difference between 8 and 10 bit. In most situations, 8 bit is fine, don’t worry about it. Very few exceptions where 8 bit won’t do the job, especially in cases where original footage is 8 bit, or if that’s what it’s going to.

Yes, I agree, one of the best reasons of going right to ProRes from HDV is for the heavy lifting you may do in the way of transitions, compositing and effects. Much better workflow than HDV. Worth every bit of the needed extra drive space and speed.

David is correct, although when I do this I usually use 8 bit. I don’t like DV50.

The only way to get true color on that monitor is with an MXO so you can calibrate it. If you just use the DVI out, you will need to tweak the monitor’s own color controls to match another monitor that you know is correct, such as a Sony PVM series monitor that is calibrated properly, but with this method you can only get so close. I have an Aquos 32″ that I have done this on and it is pretty good, but for critical color I’d get the MXO.

Interesting, I do have a Kona LH just like you, so I don’t need another card, but the info on the MXO is helpful nonetheless. If I come out of my divorce and recent illness with any cash, I’ll probably buy one!

I am not qualified to disagree with you, so I won’t. But, I want to point to some advice I got from Graeme Nattress a while back, which said that DVI out to a 23″ ACD is about as close to an MXO as you can get. This was here on the Cow, but I can’t find it.
He never said anything about a low res proxy image. And while I haven’t done the excellent tests and photos you did for your article, I have sent 1080 sequences to my CRT via my Kona LH and via DVI to my ACD and the images are too close to argue about.
This whole discussion I had with Graeme was an effort to save my cheap ass from springing for an MXO, which, I agree is a great product and the calibration is a huge plus, but my needs for grading have turned out fine with the CRT, so it’s all kinda moot.
But anyways, I was just curious about this proxy image thing…

Good question about the DV codec. I have run 8 bit uncompressed projects through this system and they look fine on the monitor.

I have an old JVC DV deck with a broken tape mechanism which I use as a pass through to my Sony PVM monitor with my MacBook system. I feed FireWire to the deck and component out to the monitor. It plays even 8 bit timelines in real time, go figure. You might be able to pick up an old deck like this cheap on eBay.

You also could put your HDV sequence into a new sequence set to DV. You may need to put the shift fields filter on the new sequence, but you would have the option of cropping or letterboxing the new sequence.
