HDV to SD
Posted by Javier Saldivar on May 10, 2008 at 12:50 amHello,
I’m using FCP 6.0.2
I’m working on an HDV project. I imported and edited all the footage as HDV 1080i60. I’m the assistant editor.
My client (the main editor) wants me to hand the entire FCP project to him but as SD. In order to do the final adjustments he just wants to see downconverted SD footage on the timeline (I prefer not to discuss his reasons for this).
I know, we can always go from HDV to SD at the end but unfortunately that’s not an option here. I would need to convert the entire FCP project from HDV to SD.Is such thing possible? If so, how?
Thanks a lot for your help.

May 10, 2008 at 1:02 amMEDIA MANAGER. Use the RECOMPRESS option. I did this a couple times and it is pretty cool. Recompress as DV. Note that the file sizes will not decrease, as DV and HDV have the same data rate.
This way you have your DV for him to look at, and all the timecode will match back to the original HDV.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I’ll give it a try, but before I have one more question. What about aspect ratio? Will I get letterboxed SD or anamorphic SD? You know if there’s a way to get it letterboxed?
Thanks again!

May 10, 2008 at 2:56 amUp to you. If you recompress to DV/NTSC, they will be letterbox. If you recompress to DV/NTSC ANAMORPHIC, then they are anamorphic.
TEST dude…test. This is how I found the answer. I didn’t know, so I recompressed two small shots from DVCPRO HD 720p to DV and saw what the result was.
Test for yourself…this is the best way to figure things out.

You also could put your HDV sequence into a new sequence set to DV. You may need to put the shift fields filter on the new sequence, but you would have the option of cropping or letterboxing the new sequence.
Have a wonderful day.

May 10, 2008 at 4:09 pmShane, what are any benefits from doing it your way (Recompressing) over just copying the entire timeline into an SD sequence?

The original poster is the assistant editor. He has captured the footage for editing. The editor wants all the footage so that he can edit it. There is no sequence yet. So the editor needs to be provided the raw footage with the source time code intact. Dropping this footage into an SD sequence and then exporting will get you clips with sequence time code…not what he wanted.
What the editor might not realize is that the HDV source footage won’t be taking up any more space than the HDV footage…there will be no space savings. BUT, he might want it as DV so that he can monitor the cut on an external monitor without the need of a capture card.

May 10, 2008 at 8:38 pmI just re-read the original post. He says “In order to do the final adjustments he just wants to see downconverted SD footage on the timeline”. It sounds like he already does have a timeline finished to do whatever he calls “final adjustments” (Color correction, grahics possibly?)
I understand your answer that if you drag and drop, then you still have all the original footage/bins in it’s original size/aspect and only the timeline resized.
My question was… Is there any benefit to doing it your way Recompressing all the footage vs. drag and drop? Quality difference? Speed for the conversion vs. rendering the SD timeline after dropping the HDV in?

May 10, 2008 at 9:26 pmErnie is right.
We have stuff already edited on the timeline. Taking that into consideration, do you know which approach would work best? Either using the media manager to downconvert or dragging the HDV sequence into a DV sequence? Thanks, I really appreciate everybody’s willingness to help.

May 11, 2008 at 2:42 amAhhh…I misread it. Pardon me…
You say…”In order to do the final adjustments he just wants to see downconverted SD footage on the timeline (I prefer not to discuss his reasons for this).”
OK..but what format of SD do you need? Uncompressed SD that will go to digibeta or DV? Really, you will need to discuss the reasons…or what the end purpose will be…in order for us to give proper advice.
