The playback standard must be set to HDV for FCP to see it. Change the setting BEFORE you plug in the FireWire to the camera, set the capture preset to HDV or ProRes, and device control to FireWire HDV. It doesn’t matter what your project settings are.

Not sure how in FCP but After Effects has frame blending which is quite good. Actually I think Motion does this as well.

You spent 30+ hours on a slideshow in FCP? Do yourself a favor and look at Fotomagico. It could do this all by itself in about a minute. I believe iPhoto can do random movement too, but Fotomagico is really great, lots of options, SD, HD whatever you want.

What I do is let it do it’s thing, then go through each clip from that tape and in the browser, change the name of each clip, or toss it. There’s a right click that gives you the option to rename the master clip in your capture scratch.
Otherwise, make a dub of the tape.
Even if you could capture without timecode, that would still not fix your problem that I can see.

It’s easy in Motion, I have a tutorial called “Motion 3 Jump Start” which is from DMTS. It’s a disc that’s about 89 bucks.
Basically though, you drag your clip into Motion and add a “retiming” behavior, there are several to pick from. Then you can set in and out points on the behavior and tweak it’s speed, easy ease etc. in the dashboard, although in M3 they call it something different now, I forget. You can add more than one behavior.
A tip is hit F6 to get a timeline under the viewer.
In the inspector tab (I think) you have to set frame blending to optical flow, and a little clock will start spinning, click on it and it will show you how much time it will take to analyze your clip. This works just like smoothcam, it analizes the whole clip and can take a loooong time. For this reason, it is sometimes wise to export the section you want to retime. You lose TC though.
Optical flow is amazing, although on my MacBookPro it won’t play the result in real time, so I have to guess using math and render, but I usually get what I want in 2 or 3 passes.

Your media should not be on your system drive. You have 3 extra bays in there, it would take you about 5 minutes to put 3 drives in and stripe them as a RAID, from which it would never drop frames with DV.

This is a speed or time ramp, and it is best done in Motion or some other compositing app and very well with Twixtor or ReTimer.
It is also one of the most over used cliches on TV right now, watch the Tour de France on VS. any morning, but don’t eat first, you’ll want to throw up.

Third vote for KRK’s I have the Rokit5s on my G5 and also the V4s on my laptop setup, fantastic for the price. BTW the new models are even better, same price.
A very good Audio house here also uses them.
