Editing HDV natively is not a big deal, but it’s not a good idea either. FCP has to conform it to update the GOP structure. It’s a bad editing format. Change your sequence settings to ProRes or 8 bit uncompressed. Or, capture to ProRes via firewire in the first place.

I edit ProRes on a MacBook Pro all the time. Which one do you have?

Open system prefrences and select the proper monitor configuration there. If it’s a 22″ monitor that will be around 1280×760 or something around there.

Playing that clip in QuickTime I can’t see what hitch you are talking about.

Most important in optimizing your images is the size and dpi.

I have a different Canon camera, but it’s manual is very specific about what settings need to be for capture. My guess is you should check there first.

There are a couple places about the same price, Shutterstock and Revostock come to mind, but David is right, good wildlife footage ain’t cheap and it never goes on sale.

Adding fields by itself might make it play smoother on an NTSC monitor, but the issue to get it to Digibeta is adding pulldown, as Shane noted. Kona is your best option. Don’t know if the BM card you have can do this.

Still images should be “optimized,” in Photoshop and the most popular recipe around here is make them twice your frame size at 72 DPI, tiff files. You still may have to add the flicker filter or a bit of vertical or gaussian blur to get rid of artifacts caused by hard thin edges and/or a scale or move.
