I believe there’s a countdown in your install disc, I think it’s in extras.

Put your playhead on the frame you want and go to export>QuickTime Conversion>still image, and select a render format. Open that file in Photoshop and de-interlace.

24p is still interlaced, the pulldown is added as the camera records to 29.97. I believe you would have to shoot in 24pa and do an advanced pulldown removal to get what you want. But, you can also take your still into Photoshop and remove the extra fields with the deinterlace filter.

If it’s truly blown out there’s really not much you can do. Lyric makes a free backlight filter, I would try using Joe’s levels on it, but don’t hold your breath.
I think someone here once suggested duping the footage over itself and messing with the composit mode and opacity, but you’ll just have to experiment.

There are so many great third party plugins out there you can make FCP do quite a bit of compositing. Kevin Monahan’s book lists many of them and has excellent tips.
Then let’s not forget FCP integration with Motion, which is pretty cool.

If you can’t get Matte’s suggestion to work, there’a a really cool little free audio capture software called Audacity that works great. You come out of the 1/8th” stereo headphone jack on even cheap cassette players and into the back of your G4 or front of our G5. Amazing little app, it has no capture limit, I used it last year to archive a bunch of tapes for a radiologist office.
