I have some clips that were shot in bright sunlight and around a beach and the result is clips that look washed out. My guess is that there wasn’t a polarizing filter that was used to cut down on the glare.
Is there a filter within FCP4.5HD or the Boris Red library that would help correct this problem? Is there a free filter somewhere that could also solve this problem?

    Chris,

If it’s truly blown out there’s really not much you can do. Lyric makes a free backlight filter, I would try using Joe’s levels on it, but don’t hold your breath.

I think someone here once suggested duping the footage over itself and messing with the composit mode and opacity, but you’ll just have to experiment.

    Good luck!

Actually, you’d want to use a “neutral density” filter.

    Sure.
Use the “3 Way Color Corrector” (3WCC) filter.

Add the 3WCC to the clip and adjust the White level and the Mid level down slightly (and maybe increase the Black level a little, if needed).

Fine tune these settings until the image regains some of its detail in the washed-out areas.
