Natively you duplicate the clip over itself and apply a soft matte and blur to the top one, which you then have to keyframe for movement. Much easier to use Joe’s filters.

In my experience, and detailed in Kevin’s answer in the other thread, size of the images matters a lot. Awful artifacts and flickering can be aggrivated by oversized images, as a rule of thumb I never make them any larger (at 72 dpi) than they absolutely have to be. Usuall no bigger that 1440 wide.

Kevin told you step-by-step how to do this. It’s really simple. No zoom or pan on a shot, 72×480 at 72 dpi. If you want to zoom or pan, 2x or 3x as big, 1440 wide or 2160 wide.
Your original scans can be much bigger, but you optimize them in Photoshop to the above sizes. That’s it.
Second question, just do everything in video at 72 dpi. Period.

My point is like what you said, downconverting HDV to uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2. So alls I’m asking is what would it look like, how much better and in what ways than regular old DV footage, not DV downconverted from HDV, does that make sense? Before I spring for the hardware and camera, I just want to know what it would look like?

Assuming you have a Beta SP deck, on the back you’ll see a multipin (12, I think) component output fixture, from which you can send a picture to your monitor.
Or, you can get a signal from the SDI out to your monitor via one of those little AJA convertors, or put an SDI card in your monitor if it will take one.

Regarding doing this same thing in NTSC land, to what original format would you compare the results of doing this downconvert from HDV? Beta SP?
I realize there would need to be cropping or letterboxing.

10 bit only buys you perhaps a little help with banding in gradients, not much else. I do everything 8bit, saves space like you said. If I get banding I jsut add a little noise.
