What system are you running on the Powerbook? All specs would help. And yes, the drives should have at least 15% room in them. Plus, it helps to optimize or erase them from time to time.

I’d throw in another idea, if your DVD is approved, and that’s all you’ll need in the future, keeping the mpeg and aiff or whatever assets are all you need. Another thing I often do is make a disk image off the final DVD, and keep that handy to instantly make more copies in Disk Utility.

I mix formats in an uncompressed timeline all the time. Yes, you have to render it, but it works fine.

Assuming you have proper drives and your hardware is in order, try doing a mixdown of your audio. This seems to fix a lot of dropped frame problems.

Among lots of annoyances like batch failures and other things, Compressor 2 is painfully slow.
But, regarding Compression markers, if you look at the 4th section of this article, there’s some pretty good advice and information.
