I have two comments about this.

On at least a half-dozen DV projects I have switched my compressor to 8 bit and rendered out a QT movie, gone through Compressor, Squeeze or Compression Master and my graphics in the resulting DVD were markedly better.

There’s another route, if you send the timeline directly to Compressor you will avoid DV compression and your graphics will look better. Section 4 here: https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/compressor_warmouth.html

With the first method, I have tested and made DVDs with and without doing the compression change and the resulting DVDs showed the difference.

NOTE BENE: Niether of these methods will improve your DV footage, it only impacts graphics, titles etc.

Yeah, I spent some time working on a Cinewave system uptown even before I had my Decklink, I remember the control panel. Thanks for all your help getting my KLH up an running, it was invaluable. Finished and delivered my first project with it just yesterday.

Hi Michael,

It’s control panel has about 30 or so different settings, which allow a boatload of different conversion settings. It’s not overwhelming and it’s not hard, just way more complicated, maybe complex is a better word, than the Decklink.

I have seen this behavior with CS2 on my own and another system, my workaround is to bring the PSD file in as a sequence, then copy and paste the layer(s) into your main sequence. The transparency will hold up when you do this. It’s a pain but it works.

Your question is not complete, because you have not said which Decklink card to compare to the K2. But I can tell you one thing the K2 can do that no DL card can do, and that is upconverd SD to HD.

The best one I’ve seen is called PhotozoomPro. Amazing. Although you can get away with uprezing them in Photoshop, the results from PZP are much better.

This is for Francois and anyone else who’s interested. I has taken me 3 days to get the Kona LH to work correctly. It is enormously more complicated than my Decklink SP, but since it does so much more, that’s expected. The control panel is an application, not a system preference.

I got it to work on Saturday, but by Sunday was noticing that it ran FCP okay but I was not able to capture. This, I found out yesterday on the AJA forum was due to no Black burst generator in my system. So I got one, and thanks to help from the AJA forum learned how to use it. Now It all works great, I can capture from both my Beta deck and my DV deck, and the quality is stunning.

So my next foray will be to start messing with some HD stuff, won’t THAT be fun!
