  • Best Capture Card?

Posted by Juliano Maesano on November 9, 2005 at 7:16 pm

Guys, I have an old Igniter Pro …. But we just bought a new G5 2.7 and the old capture card does not fit there and we may upgrade to a new board….. I see the Blackmagic Decklink is a much cheaper model but I like the Aurora I have…
Before you say it, I already tell you that I have searched for their specs but have not found much differences….

Questions: what are their main differences?

What is there to say about the Aurora Igniter and these other ones:
    Aurora Fuse
    Aurora Pipe
    Blackmagic Decklink
    Cinewave
    Aja Kona
    etc etc……

Sorry for the broad list, but I wanna know why the price is so much cheaper on the Blackmagic and about these other ones!

    Thanks!

    Juliano,

I have a Decklink SP which I bought 2 years ago for about 1100 bucks. A year later the price for that card was cut in HALF. I guess volume was on their side.

Anyways, it has served me extremely well, but now I’m wanting to do some HD work so I just bought a Kona LH.

I know nothing about Aurora products i’m afraid. But others here will chime in I’m sure.

    Juliano,

Just to cut this one off at the pass, this has been discussed at length here and then discussed again at length. Try a search on this and the capture board company’s forums.

Light blue touchpaper, stand well back……

I have the Aurora PipePro Studio that I won from the Cow (THANKS GUYS).

I have a job this weekend that I will be using it with. I have also worked with the Decklink Extreme card. I’ll report back in a bit and let you know.

I do want the Aja LH though…for my high def work.

Yes Francois, I certainly will. It hasn’t come in as yet, but I may get it today and put it in this weekend.

This is for Francois and anyone else who’s interested. I has taken me 3 days to get the Kona LH to work correctly. It is enormously more complicated than my Decklink SP, but since it does so much more, that’s expected. The control panel is an application, not a system preference.

I got it to work on Saturday, but by Sunday was noticing that it ran FCP okay but I was not able to capture. This, I found out yesterday on the AJA forum was due to no Black burst generator in my system. So I got one, and thanks to help from the AJA forum learned how to use it. Now It all works great, I can capture from both my Beta deck and my DV deck, and the quality is stunning.

So my next foray will be to start messing with some HD stuff, won’t THAT be fun!

    Have a wonderful day.

    Just curious Chris

Why is the LH so complicated? You talking about the settings/control panel?

    Hi Michael,

It’s control panel has about 30 or so different settings, which allow a boatload of different conversion settings. It’s not overwhelming and it’s not hard, just way more complicated, maybe complex is a better word, than the Decklink.

    Have a wonderful day.

chris, the control panel just allows for a ton of options with the entire Kona line and I really don’t see anyone else out there with this kind of capabilities. I’m not sure just how complex it really is, but it does take a little while to get used to if you come from a product that has very limited capabilities.

I guess for me it was pretty easy to make the conversion because my old CineWave had a full control panel similar to AJA’s where I could make a lot of adjustments independent of FCP.
