Did you get this sorted out? I just bought one of these to replace an old deck, just curious. MIne hasn’t been delivered yet.

I would usually do this in 8bit uncompressed. In FCP I would use a very cool generator called PanZoomPro from lyric.com. I would say this method is about 4-5 times faster than the motion tab and there are NO KEYFRAMES.
But, these days when I have a photos-only project more and more I’m using a different app called Fotomagico. Just yesterday I animated 80 photos of my daughter growing up for her upcoming wedding video, came to 6.5 minutes and did it all with buttery smooth Ken Burns-type moves in less than an hour. It lets you output to any format you want. Yes, you can add audio if you want.
These two solutions are about as fast as each other, but I’d give Fotomagico the edge, especially since it renders faster.

If that doesn’t work, there are a few garbage matte plugins out there, or you could do it in AE, or you could do it very easily in Motion which has fine masking, or you could get yourself a copy of Silhouette Roto and do it right inside FCP.

The wrinkle with any compression method other than DV is it won’t play back to your monitor over FireWire. You’d need a video card like a Decklink to do that. But, you can work in DV until your all done, then change the compressor to say, 8 bit and render that. Your graphics will look better in your DVD.
As far as judging quality in the canvas, it is always crappier looking than the viewer. You need a good broadcast monitor to judge quality.

One of two things come to mind:
First, try trashing your prefs.
Second, your project may be corrupt, make a new project and copy and paste everything in your timeline and browser into the new project, save as with a new name.

The canvas always looks like crap, you need to be using a proper broadcast monitor. And straight alphas are what FCP wants.

In my experience, a QT with a straight alpha looks like shit in QT but great in FCP, because it defaults to straight alpha. I always make them straight out of AE. Never had any problems with them.
