We put our 1080 30F footage into an SD timeline, let it scale itself, and we set our render settings under Video Processing to High Precision YUV, set Motion Filtering Quality to Best, and under Render Control set Quality to Best.
We never have the problems you describe, our SD DVDs are perfect.
At home I have a Kona LH, so I work in native formats, and let the card do the downconvert, again, no problems.

The only “other way” would be stop motion photography. This is a very complex commercial.

The squished movie is normal. For it to look normal when you export it, you’d have to use QuickTime conversion, and set the size to 853×480. Also, I think you can set QuickTime player to display the squished movie at 16×9.
The squished movie, when put into DVDSP will stretch itself out when you set the track to 16×9. Also, Compressor will do this too, but it will make a file that is 720×404, so it’s a toss up as to which option you go with.

If your DV deck has component outs, get some adapters and hook the LH up and capture that way.

I don’t think there’s ANY way to do this. Text in DVDSP doesn’t exist as a browser item, so I can’t see how you could cut and paste, I’d just select the titles and copy and see if it will paste into FCP. Dunno. Anyone?

Sometimes when I mix 4×3 with 16×9 material I set up a 4×3 sequence and letterbox all the 16×9 stuff. When I come to a 4×3 clip I just let it fill the screen.
The other way I sometimes work is to set up an anamorphic sequence, and when I come to a 4×3 clip I let it have bars on both sides, or blow it up in Compressor and crop off the top and bottom.

It is possible that what you’re seeing is caused by fine detail in the stills, especially when they move or zoom. Stills must be optimized in Photoshop, the best recipe is twice your frame size at 72 dpi, tiff or png. Then if it still flickers use the flicker filter and/or a small amount of gaussian or diredtional blur.

I use Episode Pro for standards conversion, seems to be the best quality.
