I think this has been covered to death, but there may be something new that I don’t know, and that is, what hardware combination can actually capture ProRes without dropping frames or otherwise failing? I know my dual 2 gig and Kona LH can’t, what is needed? I know about the AFA iO HD, but I don’t think it’s out yet, and I don’t have the cash for one anyway.

To start with, your post is confusing. At the end it seems you are trying to do a widescreen DVD, is that correct?
If you’re getting letterbox, either your footage is anamorphic or flagged as such. If you’re using a regular DV camera it may be set to record anamorphic, most likely in the squeeze mode. Only a few more expensive cameras record true anamorphic without an adapter. There’s is nothing much else besides regular 720×480 the camera could do. Was your footage exported from QuickTime at a some point? Can’t think of any other way you could have such a strange size.
Yes, Compressor is that good, you need to take the time to learn it. DVDSP is doing what you want to get from Compressor, which is what you should use. I would never let DVDSP do this.
So again, you’re trying to do an anamorphic DVD? You would have to have shot it that way or cropped 33% of it from NTSC footage to do that. Maybe some more info would help…

Hey David,
I’m with you on Motion, just can’t get my head around it, but I’ll tell ya, particleillusion is probably the easiest particle system out there. It integrates pretty well with AE too, there are tuts on the Cow on the two, pretty cool.

Try a global search engine like fotosearch.com. You can sometimes navigate to the owners and get the best price, but not cheap.

particleillusion is perfect for this, as is Particular in AE. I’m sure you could do it in Motion too, it can use some of pi’s emitters. You will have to track it through your video but it shouldn’t be too hard. I’d just keyframe it manually.
You could try LiveType, but I don’t know how well you can track stuff in there, most of it is pretty canned.
