You might be fooling the stations, but you are unnecessarily recompressing all your graphics etc. with that workflow. You should bring an uncompressed QT to your dub house and let them online it. Just my 2

The way I do this is set up your sequence as 8 bit or ProRes, and don’t let FCP change the sequence settings when you put in your first clip of HDV. It will have to render but you’ll only be getting one hit, you will not have to conform as you would in an HDV sequence.

I forgot about one thing, BCC is now split into two filter sets, so if you’re spoiled and been using the same ones in both FCP and AE, surprise, surprise, it’s gonna cost you another 500 big ones to get v5. If you started with v3 like I did, that’s as much or more than the cost of Sapphire forchrissake, More than the cost of FCP!

Shane is right, but it’s still a fun question, Sophie’s Choice in the plugin world. I have so many of these darn things, but I’d have to say the ones I use most would be Big Box of Tricks, Joe’s Filters and BCC.
I don’t really like the Noise Industries packages, but then I’m happy with the others so I haven’t really tried them that much.Have a wonderful day.

My thinking is that time saved for not having to capture is worth something, we have to store it all no matter what, so that doesn’t answer my question. It is, should shooting time go for a little more given the time we are saving the client in not having to capture? I can’t express it more simply than that…

First off, why work in an HDV sequence? That is the worst format on the planet for editing. Conforming can take forever. Put your HDV files in an 8bit timeline and render. Spit out an 8 bit movie, and tell Compressor it’s 16×9 SD. In DVDSP make an SD anamorphic disc. You’re done.
Conflicts in playing back can arise from different players and TVs. Tinker with the screen settings on the remote. The set will either letterbox it or play it widescreen, depends on what you are playing it on.

“Best” is subjective, and depends on what you want to do with it. Also, do you want DV or HDV?
There are a bunch of little cameras from Sony, Canon, Panasonic and others, do a little cruising on the B&H site under Mini DV and HDV cameras, they give complete specs, also just Google the ones that look good to you and read reviews.

That is correct, it’s the playback standard FCP is persnickety about, it will capture fine, but I would recommend rolling tape also as a backup.

Well, I’m a huge fan of Mpeg Streamclip, incredible app, in fact, that’s what I used to turn those Handbrake files into something I could use. Faster than Compressor with about as many options. But, my preferred way of capturing from DVDs is still FCP via component connection from a good player through my Kona LH to 8bit. You just can’t do better than that.
