The legal issue I just threw in I guess, heck, FCP can be used to copy any DVD from anywhere, so you are right about that.
My one experience with Handbrake was awful, the files look fine raw but are horribly compressed, and have to be converted to edit, (I tried 8 bit, and motion JPEG) and look terrible in a standard def project. Put color correction on them and the problem is magnified, borderline unusable. I about rejected them but my client insisted I use them, never again. Note: my project was Standard Def for a DVD to be projected on a large screen. While Handbrake might be fine for web work and small QT’s it is NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME. So I guess I could qualify my criticism by saying, If it’s for broadcast, Handbrake is not the best way to copy from DVDs.
If I missed something the software can do, I stand ready to be corrected, but up till now, I am vastly underwhelmed.

I stand educated. Very good points, and also to Jeremy on the Motu thing. I wasn’t thinking of the exclusivity due to the ProRes issue, but it make total sense.
Oh well, just have to scrape up more work on the road…

No arguments at all about the advantages of a laptop, ProRes, with you on all that, and the only thing I need selling on the iO is justifying the price at the present time. Like anything else, the price could come down, or someone else could introduce a competitive product at a lower cost, so I’m just waiting to see. I don’t have enough work for the MBP to justify $3500 at present. I can’t afford a Rolex or a Ferrari either. Not complaining, just waiting.

Well, I sorta got that covered, with a nice little 1tb eSATA RAID from Firmtek, so I have lots more possibilities than just FireWire on my laptop. Thanks for the info on Dual link, I’ll just have to avoid those 20 people!

Even in the best situations, using a laptop is rife with compromises. They will never be what a decent tower is, we just have to decide what trade-offs we are willing to put up with. For me at the moment it’s what’s a decent HD iO that doesn’t cost as much as a good used car!
I tried the 17″ and I thought it killed the portability factor, way too big. Just me tho…

I bailed on my purchase, and just for grins yesterday afternoon I lugged our LC-32D7U Sharp Aquos 32″ 720p TV upstairs to the studio to see what it would do as a client reference monitor. I gotta tell ya, I was blown away. Hooked it up via component, and aside from having to use the remote to select pillarbox or widescreen, the dang thing senses what’s coming in and tells you (for instance, when I sent it SD from an FCP timeline, it put up 480i in the corner for a few seconds, likewise when I sent 1080i), and everything I sent it just looked brilliant. Fantastic I should say. HD, SD everything.
It has a boatload of color and gamma controls, with which I was able to get REALLY close to what I see on the NTSC monitor. Just incredible. My only gripe is since I bought it two years ago, it’s price has cut in half! You can get these (or the latest incarnations) for around 1000 bucks or so.
I was thinking about Walter’s suggestion for the Panny plasmas, but since he says SD looks bad on them and looks great on this, guess my choice? Amazing.

I disagree with Walter, I have the glossy screen and just love it. To answer your concerns though, I never heard that about compositing on an external monitor, except that the 15″ screen just seems too small after being spoiled by a 23″ ACD on my other system. So I DO use a 17″ Samsung to composite on with my MacBook, but if you’re stuck on the little screen, I don’t thing glossy will make THAT much improvement to your eye. But I do like the glossy and spent more than one visit to the Apple store trying them out before I bought.
Oh, and OT, I read your profile, Handbrake? That’s an awful, potentially illegal program. Run away!

Boy, I sure would like to hear an answer to this too, I have one backordered 3 weeks from Dell which I bought for the same purpose. Plus, I’d like to know if it has modes for SD as well, something I couldn’t find out on their Website. If it sucks for this, I’m gonna cancel my order.

The most practical thing is to just put your native HDV in an 8bit (10bit is overkill IMO) timeline or in a ProRes one if your system can handle it. If your timeline is SD it will add the shift fields filter if your footage is not progressive. Do not let FCP change the sequence to HDV when you put in the first clip. You will have to render but it’s only one hit, quality loss is pretty minor. This has been my workflow for more than 6 months now, works great.

IMO the best interlacing package is Fields Kit from revisioneffects.com. Far and away better than anything else I’ve seen. Works in FCP and AE.
