I don’t get the attraction, looks like only a USB connection.

    Have a wonderful day.

ARCHIVING Chris…solely for archiving. USB 2 is plenty fast for that.

Not EVERY drive is used as media storage for editing…

Yeah this is for archiving. The thing that caught my attention is you don’t need to screw on some clunky drive trays. This is the first SATA enclosure I’ve seen where you just plug it in.

Shane, that Drobo thing looks awesome. I’m just wondering if data from Drobo drives can also be read by regular machines w/o the Drobo.

No. The Drobo is proprietary. If the Drobo dies you ned a new one to read the data.

It’ll work if you an eSATA Port Multiplier controller card. TONS of companies make them.

OH, BTW…I use this device to hook up my archival hard drives:

    more than that

more and more drives are coming with internal sata connections. As a result, cases fail A LOT (maxtor, seagate I’m look at you) and it’s not really easy to find a single drive fw case with an internal sata set up at the local fry’s, but this set up (or more specifically the other sata/ide connector) can help get a project back on track for a day or 2, or recover a drive.

So you mean that you can use the Drobo software with any 1×5 SATA port multiplier?

[Sean ONeil] “So you mean that you can use the Drobo software with any 1×5 SATA port multiplier?”

No…I guess I misunderstood the question. I re-read the thread and I can’t for the life of me figure out what I was responding to.

No…if you build the raid on the DROBO, it only works on the Drobo. But why would you need it to work anywhere else? In case the Drobo dies?

    Shane,

I just got one of these USB/IDE/SATA adapter from Geeks.com but it’s not mounting the drives on my MBP. What are the specs of your machine that you’re hooking it up to? I’m on 10.5.1. I wonder if it’s an OS thing?

    Thanks,

    CHL
