Is Thunderbolt and USBC interchangable? My HDDs are defo USBC, but they work in the iMac , so if the Thunderbolt iMac sockets accept USBC connections, then your mentioned devices could help

By luck I had already done what you said and brought more cards (4 x 128gb at 90mbs) instead of the speed. Which having now learnt only applies to photos is great – and lucky!
