Ha! Thanks Bob – very helpful and your info is much appreciated.

Totally agree about Futureproofing! I just mean future proof regarding capacity and a RAID system – to a non techy like me – gave me nightmares!

    Bob

Thank you for your reply – very kind.

However, I don’t think I was very clear so apologies. I don’t want to edit from the NAS/Drobo – I simple want to store old projects – if I ever need them again I would drag them back to my edit drive.

I appreciate that may seem odd to some but I wish to do it because 1) I can’t afford a top, edit-worthy NAS set up 2) I very rarely access old edit files and I’m about to purchase a new thunderbolt edit drive so may as well use that.

I just want it to back up. I want it to be future proof for 3 or 4 years at least but that makes it very hard to say how much space I’ll require. Drobo – to a non-techy like me (I’m one of those annoying creatives who gets confused easily!) – allows me to update the drives with no scary ‘could loose all my data’ process. The same can be said for when a drive fails.

However, while that makes it sound like I love Drobo – I’m on here asking because I’ve only ever used Drobo (For personal storage) and there must be a reason why NAS with RAID is always recommended over Drobo (NAS).

    Hi

Thank you for the informative reply – greatly appreciated

    In answer to your questions:

I edit on fcp7 and latest prem pro

I use a lot of different formats. But mainly either pro ress 422 or 1080p 2k

I have an average of 2 layers but I can go
up to four on certain projects

I currently have a WD USB 3. When editing it can stutter and pause.

    I’d say I’d expect/like 2tb for that price but if I can get more I wouldn’t complain 😉

I already have a back up drive thanks 🙂

Thank you once again and I look forward to your or anyone else’s response 🙂

    Thank you everyone. Interesting stuff.

My issue about Windows way is two fold a) I’m not sure how to put windows on my mac via boot camp and b) it’s another expense. Windows is a lot for something I’m not really keen on using.

I’ll take a proper look into all the options and take it from there

    Thank you every one

    Hi everyone!

Was wondering what people think of Sandisk Ultra for recording GH2 video onto?

It’s almost half the price of Sandisk Extreme and before I opt for the Extreme I’d see what people think of the Sandisk Ultra brand

Thanks again – but does anyone know if you can turn off Expanded Focus. I really don’t like it as it never seems to be at the point where I want to focus on is really distracting while setting up a shot.

I’ve looked in the manual and online and can’t find anything so I fear not

    Thanks

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. I know it’s not a bug but it’s an annoying feature and one I wish you could just shut off for good if you don’t like / want to use it.

Thank you for telling me what it’s called so I can look into it more

    Regards

    C
