VOB is the format used in DVD and will not open in Apple’s video player, video editing software easily. I want to edit and play some VOB files on Mac, but the video player QuickTime, and editing programs like FCP can’t support the VOB format.

What I can do is to convert VOB to MOV, a Mac fully compatible format. To convert DVD VOB videos for playing, editing on Mac, it’s undoubtedly that a video conversion program is needed. You can just get freeware like Handbrake to make it. If you are not satisfied with the output quality, you can try some 3rd party VOB converter for Mac without any losing quality.

Although Final Cut Pro has been improved to support MTS, it’s still not a “NATIVE” format. According to Apple, ProRes encoded MOV videos are highly compatible with FCP software. That means you can convert MTS to ProRes so that you can import MTS to Final Cut Pro for editing without any video, audio codec issues.

There are several different transcoding programs, and more than a few MTS to ProRes converting solutions. Here is a link that I combed through the options to pull together the simplest, working method.

March 7, 2014 at 8:54 am in reply to: Final Cut Pro 7.03 with Canon XF305 MXF files?

Canon XF plugin for Final Cut Pro helps Cannon users a lot while importing Canon .MXF footage into Final Cut Pro. However, users still have problems one or another when utilizing the software on Mac OS X. Well, if you have the versatile MXF Converter, it will be possible to let Final Cut Pro (X) touch MXF material shot on a Canon XF305/XF300/XF105/XF100 and C300 camera without utilizing Canon XF plugin or even handle the broken file structure and long with smooth importing and editing work.

You can try some freeware like VLC to do the work. If the output video quality can’t meet your needs, you can get some professional video convert app. I’m the Final Cut Pro X user, I successfully convert several HD AVI files to ProRes .mov with an easy-to-use AVI to MOV Converter. You can have a try.

  • As far as I know, Avid most compatible format is DNxHD, and it works all the time. If I understand you correctly, you can try to convert your MOV files from FCP to DNxHD codec. I’ve not test yet, but some QuickTime movie and Nikon MOV videos with Avid MC.

November 27, 2013 at 8:03 am in reply to: can’t import avi files in to vegas pro 12

Although AVI is listed as one of the supported formats by Sony Vegas Pro.Well, the problem is mainly due to that Windows didn’t come with the codecs that were used for those particular .AVI files(AVI is just a wrapper for a large variety of codecs.)… That’s why Sony Vegas Pro won’t open it. So in order to edit AVI videos in Sony Vegas, you need to convert AVI videos to Vegas Pro compatible format first before transferring the files to Sony Vegas.
