  • can’t import avi files in to vegas pro 12

Posted by Kyle Davis on October 21, 2013 at 6:51 pm

When ever i try to click and drag a avi file in to Vegas i get a no entry sign and it wont allow me to import it. then when i go to Vegas and press import and find the file and import it says “warning an error occurred whilst opining one or more files” and i cant work out what is going on

Any help with this would be amazing because otherwise i have to spend 20 mins converting to WMV for it to be accepted

    Many thanks

    Kyle

Many of us import AVIs everyday. I’ve got to ask, where did you source this one? Or rather, what’s inside the AVI is the real question.

AVI is just the container- you can put video files from many codecs into an AVI file. It’s likely that the codec you need is not installed. Run it through Mediainfo to see what codec created the file.

If you installed a codec pack (DONT!!) you may have overwritten a needed codec.

I’ve been importing Lagarith AVIs into VP12 without issues.

Try reinstalling the Lagarith CODEC? Check version Number of Lagarith – see below my present “working” version. IF you have installed any other CODECS lately, you could be into “CODEC WARS” where one CODEC fights for the attentions of Vegas over and above another CODEC.

Here’s what I just did with an aggressive Largarith CODEC setup; re-imported Lagarith Render back to VP12 B726 and plays back beautifully:-

    Phew! That’s great news – you’re welcome.

CODECs should be renamed CODEATHSs . . .

Although AVI is listed as one of the supported formats by Sony Vegas Pro.Well, the problem is mainly due to that Windows didn’t come with the codecs that were used for those particular .AVI files(AVI is just a wrapper for a large variety of codecs.)… That’s why Sony Vegas Pro won’t open it. So in order to edit AVI videos in Sony Vegas, you need to convert AVI videos to Vegas Pro compatible format first before transferring the files to Sony Vegas.

There is an easy way to fix the issue, you can change your AVI to a more editing-friendly format like WMV, or MPEG-2 or MOV for Sony Vegas. Here is a workaorund for you: https://www.easefab.com/video-to-software/import-avi-files-to-sony-vegas.html
