I get paid unseemly amounts of money by Apple’s competitors to do nothing more than hint that all might not be well in Whoville. Really. Its not just a living–its like 3 livings.
Actually, its an interesting place to be. I like many of the folk–yourself included–and find it a valuable nexus for many things NLE. Probably, because it was such an eventful, passionate shift that we all went through, and because of the “or not” which means you can talk about more than just FCP X, I find the forum a bit like an editor’s lounge and like to drop in to see what’s what. I still am interested in what FCP X might have to offer, and I’ve really loved some of the discussions because they’ve made me think differently about what I do. I may not harken to the idea of “Roles” but it has made me really think about tracks and routing in ways that I never might have. I like debating where Apple is going, and trying to figure out what future workstations might look like. Editing can be quite solitary, as you are undoubtedly aware, and its nice to pop into the Future of Editing Lounge to buy a diet Pepsi from the machine and talk to other editors for bit until break time is over. Isn’t that why you’re here?

Jamie, I’m quite looking forward to listening to this lecture as soon as I’ve got an hour to slot it. I’ve always wanted to read GEB, but have never gotten around to it.

Thanks, John. I always repair permissions as part of any such process, but I guess I should have mentioned it. All better, though. The answer was to hand delete a group of files and folders that uninstall does not take away with it. Did a clean install and everything was rosy.

David! How’s it going, man? Long time, no see. Scot’s suggestion sounds pretty good to me. But you guys do have an Avid over there, right? Just don’t want to tie it up with transcoding?

I agree completely. I just thought, given our forum’s recent obsession with the validity of analogies, that this piece–thick with precise, beautiful analogies about the difficulty and/or disservice of tossing off vague or false analogies, and about, just generally, the complexity involved in making successful analogies of complicated subjects–was a worthy comment to add to all the recent braying. Plus, I just love the musical thought that spews out of him, with all its themes and variations. He’s just so Baroque.
Plus, I love that he actually gets across what that “feeling” is when you push to magnets together.
