I’d EQ the bottom end out and add a wee touch of a reverb.

With or without whatever folks wanted, for the price of a dozen or so tapes the update IS a no-brainer, certainly for intel users.
I know i’ve made WAY more than a 200% ‘profit’ from my FCS investment. Can’t really fault Apple for making theirs.
I’ve changed my mind from my initial knee-jerk reaction to the release… I reckon a few more will do the same once the dust settles.

My initial feelings where the same, and certainly it sounds like your client demands are very like mine.
However, looking into things a bit more, what Apple have given us in terms of blu-ray ‘authoring’ while on the surface not as WYSIWYG as DVDSP is more than capable of producing BLU-RAY disks on a par with Encore and dvditproHD. The XML nature of the ‘templating’ will result soon enough in a WYSIWYG design plugin.
If you need to expand the capabilities into AACS/ISAN/CMF for replication, there are a number of sub $400 ‘premaster’ solutions that will take care of that for you.

Now if Apple had hired these guys to do their marketing release videos, I think folks would be feeling much better about it all!

I would bet on them being 7 only.
Though… don’t take me up on that bet yet 😛

There is nothing in this release that makes me go ‘wow i will use that’. Pretty much everything in there feels like it should have already been there. It feels like a long overdue large point release.
I have no doubt that the less than satisfying grunt at blu-ray (even though not totally unexpected) has clouded any positivity on my part, but I just cannot find anything to excited about.
Trying to be positive…

We use this,
https://www.squarebox.co.uk/server.html
Can’t say I’ve ever had any complaints from our producers about it. We even give them 500Gb drives with proxy clips for them to use/log/edit offline while they’re away doing producers things with no internet.
You can XML logging and edl type data in and out of FCP.

Walter,
We have solutions from both DoStudio and Sonic.
Now that DoStudio have allowed a ‘one off’ type payment rather than the monthly fee, its getting a bit more of attention. DVDit pro does work… but it’s really picky about formats..and i mean REALLY.
It has never been a case of waiting for Apple, however it is very much a case of..’why do we buy this when this is cheaper and can do it ALL on one machine with one operator’ from the windows zealot bean-counters.
There is only so long I am going to be able to fight FCS’s corner in the growing shadow of adobe and vegas.
I love FCP, its the only editing system I have ever felt was close to Discreets EDIT* in terms of usability, but I just cant help feeling that Apple have dropped the ball a bit with this one.
I admit I am most likely overly-frustrated with this update, and there are no doubt many things that are greatly improved for other users… but in purely selfish terms, short of the shadows in motion there is nothing there that really gets me much benefit.

Surprised or not is hardly an issue. FCS sells it self as an allround workflow solution, essentially heads up against the CS4 suite and Sony’s Vegas Suite which now both sport blu-ray authoring.
Whatever Apples crystal ball tells them about Blu-Ray, it is an increasing demand from our clients. As such it is an increasing weight from our money men to ditch ‘these expensive apple machines’ and go with a less expensive yet more featured (to their eyes at least) solution.
While I do not expect apple to pander to MY specific needs, I did expect more than a grunt and nod towards blu-ray.
