Hey Noah, I’ve just picked up a 2.16ghz iMac with the 128mb video card and i’m upgrading to 3gb of RAM. I haven’t upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 yet, should i stick with running Motion 2 for now or do you think Motion 3 will run decently?

Visual Literacy is a good one Steve, and even though it is focused on print pieces i think it totally applies to motion design and is awesome for making you look at a design problem and then see how else it can be approached. form, color, and composition are consistent in some way or another across all design, and i think a lot people who get into video and multimedia do so with very little knowledge of design and become simply software operators.

The other design book i really like is The Elements of Graphic Design: Space, Unity, Page Architecture, and Type by Alexander White, really gives a great understanding of the different design elements and how they work together.

Sure is Peter, i was thinking it would be rather similar to the Intel Mini as my old iBook is identical inside to the original Mini. and i want one 🙂

that being said, anyone run the UBs of Motion/Final Cut on an Intel Mini? I’m curious what the performance is like and would be like on the MacBook.

the dvMatte plug-in for After Effects is also very good, better than Keylight for DV footage in my experiments.

Easiest way is probably just take the original file and run it through QT pro and resize/recompress it there. not sure why resizing in motion isn’t changing the filesize though.

  • Would it be hard to make it black, cut/paste, then adjust the opacity in illustrator?

To be honest I never have thought of Motion as a pro compositing app…good for some graphic/text animation and particle work, but final comps are done with Motion sequences in AE or shake…or do others have a different opinion?

Thanks guys. I don’t do a lot of video yet here at work so don’t know that I can add much to this machine for now but it’s good to know. appreciate the info.

Very close Jim, figured it out.

i had xkeys installed to open a few other programs via shortcuts with my function keys. even though Motion 2 wasn’t bothered by it at all and worked perfectly for some reason Motion 1 has an issue with it. deleted all my prefs for xkeys and they all work great now, yay.

thanks for the tip, i’m back to Motion-ing 🙂
