Hi John
– I like Kalle’s idea better — suggest 2 static patches for first frame then either stabilise footage or track footage and apply data to patches —–

– with organic changes such as lighting water etc I find it easiest to replace with elements from the footage wherever possible.
– with this shot it might work to take the middle sections of the panels ( where there are no crosses ) and zoom them up to cover the crosses.

— interesting Walter……
……..looking back at it I would say thats the reason I had similar problems a while ago — if I reset everything it reappeared …

Hi
If you mean that the map is only to be made up of complete squares I think that will require lots of decisions about which to leave in and which to take out so that legibility and good looks are maximised.
I do not know of anyway to automate this and if you want to be in control of the detail I think you probably need to artwork the edges carefully by hand so that it looks good.
I would do this in either illustrator or photoshop by overlaying a transparent map as a guide and selectively deleting squares by hand.
Also might be worth checking on the net to see if this already exists somewhere…….

Hi
——– have had similar before when camera angle/positioning values/settings place the pre-comp layer out of sight in some way — — ie its visible from the main comp where the final result is calculated but not from inside the pre-comp because of the settings that apply there —
If this is the case it explains why it plays ok but is hard to adjust inside the precomp — in my case I suspect there was a better way of managing the project but I couldnt work it out so scrapped the file and started again
To test this theory you can reset the camera and all other values affecting the layer ( inside the pre-comp ) to see if it reappears and if it does then this is probably it …

Hi Steven
—— that is what one would expect but I think not – I reckon you need to check the button in the parent comp ( ? ) —
—— I’ll admit to being a bit slow in getting to fully understand this function and I am as keen to hear the full logic of this as you are ….

Hi Walter
I reckon you would be doing the AE community a great service if you are able to write an article that explains not only the basics but how these might apply in more complex situations.
I think you are right about the cause of confusion but also, in my experience the real problems start when you need the precomp ( which may have other comps inside )to behave like a single scaleable item which is a blend of effects / keys / whatever.
This seems especially tricky if using ray tracing as most effects do not work with 3D and therefore need implementing in precomps.
I cant remember the jobs where I have had to use a workarounds but next time I am stuck I will save a copy for reference.

Hi Steven
I know what you mean about continuous rasterise especially when using multiple comps in 3D — in some configurations I’m not even sure it works properly because on some occaiasions I have had to give up and use workarounds. ( could still be operator error but its sure not simple )
However IMO I still go for vector assets every time as it gives a much cleaner result – well worth the hassle.
This is especially true with type / logo assets / and anything that needs to be scaled up.
If you are still getting used to the foibles of continuous rasterise I suggest you just stick with it rather than avoid it.
If anyone has guru type knowledge of what happens when you have a comp inside a comp inside a comp etc ( using vectors ) — would be interested myself.

Hi Dave and Kevin
Many thanks for the info – much appreciated.

…. a frame of black takes a lot less space than a photo of flowers which has more info – same way if one design has large areas of flat colour it takes less space.
This could be the answer….
