Joliet adds longer filenames than the 26 you talk about.
I always make sure Joliet extensions are off for maximum compatability.
If your backing up data with long filenames it should be on.

any DVD will look soft on a computer monitor as it uses square
pixels and the medium is non-square.better to check it on a television and set top player first.
It should be sharp and clear.

Well thats really dissapointing to hear the Sony YUV codec is worse than DV.
But you can always render to BMD 10-bit and not have the problems right?
BMD 10-bit still looks better than DV re-rendered correct?The reason 480 and 486 timelines don’t work is that the pixel image aspect
is slightly off (the 6 lines).Rendering 486 graphics to a 480 timeline will cause tearing while 480 graphics
to 486 will cause aliasing problems. (sigh) -

It’s true that CD Audio levels are less with anything television related.
DVD, Tape whatever it is.the peak rate for cd’s is usually -1 or 0 normalized
the peak rate for video is usually -10 with occasional peaks of -6
still within spec. -
The best thing to do is consider other disc media. some brands just don’t fare
well across the spectrum of players out there.you can find out in advance if your disc will work or not by going to dvdrhelp.com
and checking the player list and the media compatibility charts.I have used Ritek Media exclusively since mid 2002 and amazingly enough have never had any discs returned for unplayability. I go through about 250 DVD’s a month and they all go to mostly new clients.

Not yet at least.
You’d be better off just recording from a set top player at this point.

You can’t specify the line resolution and have it play like that from a DVD.
You’ve got to follow the allowable specs.
To record tons of VHS tapes to DVD with as much as possible recorded but without losing quality, I would recommend you purchase a set top recorder and record your tapes in the 4-hour mode.
There is a 6-hour mode on most of them but the quality is terrible.

You should only go through one step.
HDCAM to DVCPRO to Mpeg2 is definitely one step too many and will
likely affect your final image.Whatever you do to downrez your HDCAM material, try and do
it with a “Bicubic” method of downsizing. otherwise you might
find some jaggedness in your shots.
