While your reading this I forgot to ask you, how are you feeding your HD Plasma monitor? Did you get an HDMI or DVI Board, or do they make an HD/SD-SDI input?

Indeed.
I’ve seen some amateur stuff coming from the local film festivals.
Bars at the head (of course) with tone at 0 instead of -20 (YIKES!!!)
and lots of footage with blown out whites and crushed blacks.
But those ever important Bars are there! 🙂

Your video preview settings are probably causing that.
I’ve noticed that happen when the frame rate isn’t exact of your source footage.

I keep hearing the term “trash your preferences”
does that mean deleting the presets in fcp?
so that it rebuilds them on the next launch?

If its real anamorphic then you have to check the anamorphic option under the properties of each clip (one at a time) in your bins. I don’t think FCP can interpret (like most apps) what is and what is not anamorphic.
In a 4:3 project, they will naturally letterbox.

DV and most shades of red are like oil and water. And they will never play nice.
DV is 4:1:1 for sampling
mpeg2 is 4:2:0 for sampling
DV is compressed by each frame
Mpeg2 is compressed by a number of frames (GOP)
