Question for Walter RE: Plasma Display
Posted by Chris Borjis on November 17, 2006 at 11:28 pmWalter did you say you have the Panasonic Plasma model TH42PX500?
I’m referring to the one that “wows” your clients.
I recall you saying you do mostly 720P so it maps the resolution almost perfectly.
How does 1080 content look on it?
We’re moving into a brand new facility and there’s a mount for a 42″
flat panel in the edit room. The boss wants that hole filled on our opening day of business.Walter Biscardi replied 19 years, 5 months ago 6 Members · 10 Replies -

Nope, the TH-50PHD8UK 50″ model. We actually do a mix of 720 and 1080i now and the 1080i looks fantastic. We’re going to put the 37″ version of this screen in our smaller suite very shortly.

I spoke with engineeers at the Panasonic booth at the DV Expo on Wednesday and they said to definitely get the 9-series plasmas, not the 8-series such as the one you mentioned. They say their technology has improved markedly in the 9-series and yet the price is lower on the newer models. The newer ones have 10000:1 contrast ratio.
Check out the prices at Newegg, they are incredibly low.

November 18, 2006 at 4:18 amJust ordered the 50″ 9 series and I can’t wait til it gets here. Got the 720p version though, not the new 1080p version. (the TH-50PH9UK not the TH-PF9UK).
Some other goodies…Panasonic is offering a $100 rebate until the end of the year, and they are also offering a 4 year extended warranty until the end of the year (for a total of 5 years).
Now is a good time to buy them.

November 18, 2006 at 4:42 amYOu guys aren’t worried at all about the aging process of Plasma? The fact that after a few years the picture goes yellow, as we are just finding out with some of the first plasma sets.
I’d think plasma would be the last thing to buy…

November 18, 2006 at 5:18 amWith the free extended warranty that Panasonic is offering, I’m not really worried about it. Truthfully, I’ve never heard of it. Burn in seems to also be a thing of the past, no greater worry than CRT, this is of course after the proper plasma break in period.

Nope, not with the pro models. As I’ve stated in the past, the Panny we run can almost replicate the Sony PVM20L5/1 monitor we use for color correction and it’s just a stunning display. LCD doesn’t come close to the black reproduction of plasma.

November 20, 2006 at 4:57 pmWow thanks for that tip David!
If anyone is still reading this thread, does panasonic offer an input card with HD/SD-SDI?
OR is HDMI good enough?

Yes. But if I recall correctly, it’s about the same price as the display. We simply ordered a second Component input for ours.
